Some of the stress may come from facing The Unknown &#8211; after all, in most cases you won&#8217;t really know what you&#8217;ll encounter in the exams until you actually get into that room and turn over that paper. Exams are of course a test of your ability to think on your feet and apply what you know to a new situation under time pressure, but there are some things you can inform yourself about in advance, which might help to steady your nerves and make you feel more in control of the situation! In this post, we&#8217;ve collated some of the support that&#8217;s available to you so you can be as well prepared as it&#8217;s possible to be.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Things you should know about:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a title=\"University Exams\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/students\/progress\/exams\/exams\/\">University Examinations website <\/a>has all the information you need about exams at Newcastle, including FAQs, timetables and details of the processes and procedures.<\/li>\n<li>One of the best revision resources is looking at and working with past exam papers. You can find out more about the kind of\u00a0paper you&#8217;ll likely be sitting, and can practice with authentic questions. You can find <a title=\"past papers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/library\/resources\/exam-papers\/\">past papers for your modules online<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s a good idea too to make sure you&#8217;re familiar with the <a title=\"Newcastle Exam regulations\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/students\/progress\/exams\/exams\/examrules.htm\">examination regulations<\/a>&#8211; you don&#8217;t want to accidentally fall foul of them!<\/li>\n<li>Hopefully all will go well, but it&#8217;s a good idea to know what to do if the unexpected happens. Find out about how to let the University know about <a title=\"Personal Extenuating Circumstances\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/students\/progress\/student-resources\/help\/\">Personal Extenuating Circumstances <\/a>and what adjustments might be possible. The earlier you let the University know of any personal issues which might have impacted on your exams performance, the better. You can <a title=\"Personal Extenuating Circumstances\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/students\/progress\/student-resources\/help\/\">find out more via Student Progress<\/a>, or have a chat to the <a title=\"NUSU Advice Centre\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nusu.co.uk\/welfare\/sac\/advicepages\/academic\/\">Student Union Advice Centre <\/a>who can talk you through the process and support you.<\/li>\n<li>Similarly, it&#8217;s useful to know what to do if you feel that there was a problem with the exams or examining process. You can <a title=\"Newcastle University Appeals\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/students\/progress\/Regulations\/SPS\/appeals.htm\">find out more about Appeals <\/a>from Student Progress or talk to the Student Union Advice Centre.<\/li>\n<li>If you have a disability, you can talk to Student Wellbeing to find out more about any <a title=\"Reasonable Adjustments\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/students\/wellbeing\/disability-support\/support\/examinations.htm\">reasonable adjustments or concessions <\/a>which can be made to the exams process to make sure you can achieve your best.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Things you might find helpful:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your lecturers and personal tutor are of course a first point of call if you have specific questions about exams in your subject. They can also be a useful source of hints, tips and reassurance more generally through.<\/li>\n<li>If you want to talk through your revision strategies, exam technique, or just think about what exams are really there to test, you can come and chat with us in confidence here in the <a title=\"Writing Development Centre\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/students\/wdc\/\">Writing Development Centre<\/a>. In addition to this blog, we have some <a title=\"Exams advice from the WDC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/students\/wdc\/learning\/exams\/\">advice and tips on our website<\/a>. We&#8217;re also running<a title=\"Exams and revision workshops from the WDC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/students\/wdc\/group\/generic\/schedule2.htm\"> exams and revision workshops<\/a> over the period, but if you can&#8217;t make it, you can <a title=\"Slideshare\" href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/WDCNewcastle\">find our slides online<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>If you have a disability, including a <a title=\"SpLD\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/students\/wellbeing\/learningsupport\/dyslexia\/support.htm\">Specific Learning Difficulty<\/a>, you can also talk to the advisers in Student Wellbeing about exam tips and revision strategies which will work for you.<\/li>\n<li>The Student Union\u00a0are running a <a title=\"NUSU Stressed Out Student\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nusu.co.uk\/news\/article\/6516\/SOS-Stressed-Out-Students\/\">Stressed Out Student\u00a0<\/a>campaign to help you bust your stress levels\u00a0with fun, calming\u00a0activities. Get in touch with your inner child, or cuddle a puppy!\u00a0They also have a <a title=\"NUSU exams planner\" href=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/7bab1d66152dba4f0e0e97d0d\/files\/S_O_S_Term_3_Study_Planner_Download_.pdf\">handy planner <\/a>to help you stay on top of all your deadlines and\u00a0exams.<\/li>\n<li>The <a title=\"Chaplaincy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/students\/chaplaincy\/about\/\">University\u00a0Chaplains <\/a>will be available in the Robinson Library for you to chat in confidence to about exams, study, or any wider issues for which you&#8217;d appreciate a friendly\u00a0listening ear. Ask at the Robinson Library reception desk for further details.<\/li>\n<li>Exams is a busy period for everyone, and study space is at a premium.
