{"id":288,"date":"2026-05-07T10:57:52","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T09:57:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/anti-racism\/?page_id=288"},"modified":"2026-05-08T10:40:20","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T09:40:20","slug":"our-impact-and-engagement","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/anti-racism\/our-impact-and-engagement\/","title":{"rendered":"Our impact and engagement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Promoting anti-racism<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A co-produced project by Peter and Dr Joel White with Shawlands Academy in Glasgow led to the development of an animation\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/NcZpL4kSLpU?si=gZwjh_O1rSTIT3sr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10 ways to tackle racism at school<\/a>\u00a0which has been included as a case study example of anti-racism in Scottish schools as part of Education Scotland\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/education.gov.scot\/resources\/anti-racist-education\/young-anti-racist-voices\/anti-racism-in-scottish-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Young anti-racist voices of Scotland<\/a>\u00a0initiative.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An animation Peter worked on focused on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/HbNC4Xi7gZA?si=hIedaDrzj2oJwRVD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hate Crimes in the UK<\/a>\u00a0is used as part of the induction process at several universities and has been used by Northumbria Police as part of their Hate Crime Champions training.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A guide co-created with pupils in Glasgow,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/glasgow.gov.uk\/media\/6594\/Get-Your-Facts-Right\/pdf\/Get_Your_Facts_Right.pdf?m=1692362672377\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Get your facts right: a guide to involving young people in social research<\/a>\u00a0continues to be used by Glasgow City Council\u2019s Education Services Research Group.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tackling Islamophobia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Evidence from Peter&#8217;s collaborative work was submitted to the UK Women and Equalities Committee inquiry into gendered Islamophobia and is referred to numerous times in their report\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/publications\/51305\/documents\/285022\/default\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Discrimination, harassment and abuse against Muslim women<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The European Coalition of Cities Against Racism report\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eccar.info\/sites\/default\/files\/document\/ENG_ECCAR%20Guidebook%20Local%20Actions%20against%20Anti-Muslim%20Racism.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Local Actions Against Anti-Muslim Racism<\/a>\u00a0includes an interview with Peter about masculinities and Islamophobia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From 2021-2024, Peter provided the Secretariat for the Cross Party Group on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.scot\/get-involved\/cross-party-groups\/current-and-previous-cross-party-groups\/2021\/challenging-racial-and-religious-prejudice#:~:text=Challenging%20Racial%20and%20Religious%20Prejudice%20This%20Cross-party%20group%27s,and%20how%20they%20can%20be%20challenged%20and%20overcome.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Challenging Racial and Religious Prejudice<\/a>\u00a0in the Scottish Parliament; this replaced the previous group focused on Tackling Islamophobia which was set up in 2018 and from which the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eprints.ncl.ac.uk\/file_store\/production\/275641\/983D9A24-4271-4F75-B52B-25B164DDC243.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first inquiry into Islamophobia<\/a>\u00a0in Scotland was produced. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peter worked with the CPG on Tackling Islamophobia Uzma Mir to produce\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eprints.ncl.ac.uk\/file_store\/production\/294430\/555C6BE6-4145-48A3-8381-6DA016D5DA23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">media guidelines<\/a>\u00a0for journalists on reporting on Muslims and Islam (including a helpful\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eprints.ncl.ac.uk\/file_store\/production\/294431\/DD4557FC-8D58-4717-87CC-26778224D96C.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">summary<\/a>).
