Amongst a number of areas of\u00a0social\u00a0inequality\u00a0and\u00a0justice, a key focus of much of my research is anti-racism and Islamophobia alongside the experiences of refugee and migrant communities. I am currently a Leverhulme Major Research Fellow (Sept 2023 – Sept 2026) on a project on everyday Islamophobia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2024, I was also presented with the Back Award from the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers for sustained and outstanding contributions to policy development through research in the same year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of my key areas of research include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Islamophobia<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>– a key focus of my ongoing research is upon the ways in which Islamophobia\u00a0operates<\/a>\u00a0within society to exclude and marginalise Muslims and others\u00a0mistaken for being Muslim<\/a>. I am eager to promote better\u00a0understanding of Islamophobia<\/a>\u00a0and to explore the ways in which it reveals itself in distinctive ways in\u00a0different places<\/a>. In collaboration with John Clayton (Northumbria) and TellMAMA, I recently produced a report about\u00a0anti-Muslim hatred in the North East of England<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Refugee experiences<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 I have recently led two projects about the experiences of refugees, one funded by\u00a0HERA Public Spaces<\/a>\u00a0call focusing on\u00a0refugee youth<\/a>\u00a0and public space, and a second funded by\u00a0ESRC<\/a>\u00a0about refugees and\u00a0Covid-19<\/a>. I have collaborated on a publication about the\u00a0response of the third sector to supporting asylum seekers<\/a>\u00a0and have produced a short report about\u00a0researching refugee youth<\/a>\u00a0with the RGS-IBG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intersectionality<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 sensitivity to the complex intersections of multiple forms of discrimination (rather than only looking at single forms of oppression) has been a key focus of much of my research. I have reviewed work about intersectionality in\u00a0social geography<\/a>\u00a0and worked with Stacy Bias to produce an animated video to address the question,\u00a0what is intersectionality<\/a>? This video has been received over 765,000 views on YouTube (you can subscribe to my YouTube account<\/a>\u00a0to see this and other videos). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
