{"id":128,"date":"2016-07-04T09:44:28","date_gmt":"2016-07-04T08:44:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/apl\/?p=128"},"modified":"2016-07-04T09:44:28","modified_gmt":"2016-07-04T08:44:28","slug":"yes-planning-with-young-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/apl\/2016\/07\/04\/yes-planning-with-young-people\/","title":{"rendered":"YES: Planning with Young People"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is often said amongst the planning profession that it is hard to explain exactly what <strong>town planning<\/strong> means.\u00a0 During this last academic year, 15 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/undergraduate\/degrees\/k421\/#courseoverview\">undergraduate planning<\/a> students at Newcastle University have been rising to that very challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers for the <strong>YES Planning<\/strong> project have been learning how to discuss planning issues with young people, to help them understand the processes that change our planned environment, and to allow them to feel that <strong>their opinion about the environment is important<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2015, Kevin Franks, from <a href=\"http:\/\/youthfocusne.org.uk\/\">Youth Focus North East<\/a> trained the student volunteers to work with young people using engagement and participatory techniques.<\/p>\n<p>Building on the <a href=\"http:\/\/toolkit.ncl.ac.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/Final%20Toolkit.pdf\">tried and tested planning activities that the YES Planning project had developed over the previous two years<\/a>,\u00a0this year\u2019s volunteers have worked with around 100 young people in schools and youth councils on local planning issues.\u00a0 Projects have included a controversial planning application for a hot food restaurant; town centre provision for young people; designing an eco-town; and research funded by the Catherine Cookson Foundation which has explored young people\u2019s visions for Tyneside in 2030.<\/p>\n<p>The sessions have been well received by the young people and their leaders.\u00a0 As one youth leader explained:\u00a0 \u201cThe sessions were centred around them and their future which is great; their opinions were really valued\u201d.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_129\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-129\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-129\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/apl\/files\/2016\/07\/YES-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Yes Planning\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/apl\/files\/2016\/07\/YES-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/apl\/files\/2016\/07\/YES-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/apl\/files\/2016\/07\/YES-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/apl\/files\/2016\/07\/YES.jpg 798w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-129\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yes Planning volunteers trialing their resources<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The student volunteers have also enjoyed the experience of being involved in the project.
