We recently ran an app swap event at the Learning and Teaching conference. This was very well attended, although the room layout was not conducive to the collaborative nature of these events. We managed, and the participants contributed some fantastic apps, some of which are outlined below.<\/p>\n

Research and Notetaking<\/h2>\n

Evernote<\/a><\/p>\n

Evernote<\/b>\u00a0is a suite type of software and services, designed for notetaking and archiving. A “note” can be a piece of formatted text, a full webpage or webpage excerpt, a photograph, a voice memo, or a handwritten “ink” note. Notes can also have file attachments.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mendeley<\/a><\/p>\n

Mendeley is a free reference manager and academic social network. Make your own fully-searchable library in seconds, cite as you write, and read and annotate your PDFs on any device.<\/p>\n

Pubmed<\/a><\/p>\n

PubMed\u00a0comprises more than 23 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books<\/p>\n

Viber<\/a><\/p>\n

Free calls, text and picture sharing with anyone, anywhere!<\/p>\n

iAnnotate<\/a><\/p>\n

Use iAnnotate to read, mark up, and share PDF, DOC, PPT and image files<\/p>\n

Dragon Dictate<\/a><\/p>\n

Speech to text software. Once the software has ‘learned’ your voice it is very powerful.<\/p>\n

S Note<\/a><\/p>\n

Samsung notetaking tool<\/p>\n

Editorial<\/a><\/p>\n

Editorial is a plain text editor for the iPad with powerful automation tools and an inline preview for writing Markdown.<\/p>\n

Presentation and Communication<\/h2>\n

Nearpod<\/a><\/p>\n

The Nearpod platform enables teachers to use their iPads to manage content on students’ iPads, iPhones, iPods or Macs. It combines presentation, collaboration, and real-time assessment tools into one integrated solution. The main presentation on this session was run through Nearpod.<\/p>\n

Dropbox<\/p>\n

Cloud storage app. Syncs between devices.<\/p>\n

Google Hangouts<\/p>\n

Free group video calls \/ messaging.<\/p>\n

Lync<\/p>\n

Video and web conference \/ online meetings tool.<\/p>\n

Skype<\/p>\n

Similar to Lync. Online video calls \/ meetings.<\/p>\n

Goto Meeting<\/p>\n

Web conferencing software.<\/p>\n

Repligo<\/p>\n

RepliGo Reader is an android application to enable\u00a0viewing, form filling and annotating\u00a0<\/strong>of PDF files.<\/p>\n

Assessment<\/h2>\n

Duolingo<\/a><\/p>\n

Gamification of language learning<\/p>\n

Memrise<\/a><\/p>\n

Another app that gamifies the learning of languages<\/p>\n

Veo<\/a><\/p>\n

Newcastle University’s app used for video observation for self- reflection and improvement<\/p>\n

Blackboard Mobile<\/a><\/p>\n

Blackboards own mobile app, linking through to the VLE.<\/p>\n

Productivity<\/span><\/p>\n

Wunderlist<\/a><\/p>\n

Wunderlist\u00a0is a very simple, well designed and easy-to-use task management tool<\/p>\n

Due<\/a><\/p>\n

Fast reminder app for multiple platforms. No need for an account. Very simple to use.<\/p>\n
