{"id":8,"date":"2020-11-06T18:39:37","date_gmt":"2020-11-06T18:39:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/astro-obs\/?page_id=8"},"modified":"2026-01-26T08:26:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T08:26:15","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/astro-obs\/","title":{"rendered":"Home"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Our Astrophysics and Observational Cosmology (Astro-Obs) research group is based in the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/maths-physics\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/maths-physics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics<\/a> at Newcastle University. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/astro-obs\/group\/\">Our group <\/a>began in 2019 as part of Newcastle University&#8217;s (on-going) plan to grow Physics and Astronomy. Our research spans observational cosmology, galaxy evolution, active galactic nuclei, compact objects, stellar astrophysics (including asteroseismology), and data methods (machine learning, sonification etc.). We have research ties with the other groups in the school, including <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/cosmology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">theoretical cosmology<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/maths-physics\/research\/applied\/astro-fluid\/#overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">astrophysical fluids<\/a>. Rubin Observatory (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lsst.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">LSST<\/a>), the European Southern Observatory (ESO),<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euclid-ec.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Euclid<\/a>, The Multi-object optical and near-infrared spectrograph<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/vltmoons.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"> (MOONS)<\/a>, and the Kilo-Degree Survey (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/kids.strw.leidenuniv.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\">KiDS<\/a>). We are regular users of a wide range of observational facilities, including the European Southern Observatory, ALMA, as well as NASA&#8217;s JWST, TESS and ESA&#8217;s PLATO space missions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our group is also very passionate about improving diversity and accessibility in science.
