Secondly, I&#8217;d like to thank all of you who attended, asked questions and engaged with the event (not just for the mince pies).&nbsp; Finally I&#8217;d like to thank our judges who did a sterling job deciding our prize winners!<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_166\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-166\" style=\"width: 2568px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-166\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/bns\/files\/2019\/01\/students-and-staff.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"2568\" height=\"886\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-166\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SBMS students discussing their research with fellow peers, staff and the postgraduate researcher judges<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Our summer research students did an excellent job of creating visually stimulating posters and concisely presenting their data. There was a wide range of work presented including research on the effects of E-cigarettes on airway epithelial cells, Dementia with Lewy Bodies, bacterial urinary tract infections, T-cell function in rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_167\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-167\" style=\"width: 2062px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-167\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/bns\/files\/2019\/01\/students-presenting.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"2062\" height=\"933\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-167\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left to right, Adam Duxfield, Gokul Krishnan and Cezar Nicolae Barbu presenting their research posters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We had students presenting research performed in Newcastle and our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/numed\/\">NUMed<\/a> campus in Malaysia . The NUMed research included determining the antimicrobial property of local plants and the antimicrobial resistance of bacteria.<\/p>\n<p>We also had work showcased by students from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/biomed\/sport-exercise-science\/\">Sport and Exercise Science<\/a> and from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/biomed\/food-nutrition\/\">Food and Nutrition Science<\/a>, providing the event with a well rounded view of SMBS research.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_158\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-158\" style=\"width: 386px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-158 \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/bns\/files\/2019\/01\/IMG_20181212_154116-e1547045216284-836x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"386\" height=\"472\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-158\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katie &#8211; 2nd year Sport and Exercise Science, showcasing her summer project proposal on ankle injury in elite basketball players<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The poster session was a fantastic opportunity for our students to communicate their research and build confidence in defending their work &#8211; a skill vital for their final year project. The session also provided a chance for our current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/biomed\/\">SBMS<\/a> second year students, who are seeking summer placements, to ask their peers how they found their placements and gain any tips about potential supervisors and applying for funding.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>And the winners are&#8230;.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The posters were judged on the clarity and logical format of each section, overall design, presentation of research, and ability to answer questions. The goal of this research is to increase the number of available organs that are suitable for transplantation and help to solve the organ shortage crisis.
