We change.\u201d<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By Sabrina Amran,<\/strong> Third Year Biomedical Sciences student<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/bns\/files\/2020\/01\/sabrina-and-firends-outside-the-medial-school-e1578927746349.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-669\" \/><figcaption>Flatmates and I (in middle) visiting (and posing!) the med school for the first time!<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK was a lot different in my childhood memories compared to how I see it as of now.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, \u2018Wilkinsons\u2019 became \u2018Wilko\u2019, and everything was a couple pounds cheaper 7 years ago. The weather now seemed sunnier and hotter as well&#8230;but  I&#8217;m not sure how long this will last.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>I was born in Blackburn, raised in Manchester, then moved to Malaysia (my home country &#x1f1f2;&#x1f1fe; ! ) during my teens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/wPuww3sC48cxkO8N9xYj-AMYIprPk_mpFcLAJy_AveXDJL1F9OwVZHfU4O1AOi89ooTeML7WAcQv35Nq164enVtjFr0ebfyfGl0LFQEZIFgINS47iADOMTnUvxx7nmfA1ut86ypJ\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Sunrise on <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tanjongjararesort.com\/our-story.html\"><em>a beach in Terengganu<\/em><\/a><em>, east of Malaysia <\/em>&#x1f60d;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally at the age of 20, I had the opportunity to come back to the UK for my final year of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/undergraduate\/degrees\/b940\/\">Biomedical Sciences<\/a>! Flying over and prepping for the year was quite stressful, but worth the effort.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>First Impressions <\/strong>&#x1f914;<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>When I first arrived in Newcastle, everything in my memory was there. The cold wind, the constant bustle of shoppers in town, the green and red man on the traffic lights, the strong British accents. I had been nervous about coming back, worrying about hating the weather or the lifestyle here.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/QTaf7iuWYvw1gJLnufdAomPAb_nrjptr6n6cQOc1TGyRbenlQKQUAMMpLjdalngOOTl2chvEfxJAQvp11LaZlZwf88dmvmejQuO7gRly2BruiN-APQ0Jm2kNKI-5aBEiLeEhuXMs\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Green and red man on at the same time?!&nbsp;<\/em> <em>Source: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/mildlyinteresting\/comments\/4odq1t\/this_traffic_light_was_showing_both_the_green_and\/\"><em>Reddit<\/em><\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those worries have proven false, instead I feel comfort in coming back. The food, although bland, is fresh and very satisfying. The colder weather is a relief after roasting in humidity for the past couple years. The people and environment are wholesome and welcoming. My accommodation in the middle of town is conveniently placed next to the mall and the markets!&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/Cis-tjm_Ozm4xk-gfF2mawr0_qyJHOhXgJU_630ZIZJTo2QVFE40cZWMDypCNq-Vjae866ZLUsbyQLPQrIFGdzuMqYHtL065TwI6ZWP_SZmM8thrvzcaqiVFIm-VZy1pBCwxwKB-\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Me and the girls stocking up for groceries <\/em>&#x1f606;  <em>Source: GIPHY<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And most importantly, a new adventure was about to start!&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Uni!&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/vEJ2VSHq86JtwFEV3fGXlfbKTQnK1qGQlJka3HDLnPlCxCisYzyU-TolEhWKDUUwW1kZVfoH2WokU74wyWpuCOAelx3g_qYEtGA5jEKM3rEfX14Nuk2xRKyl5bHcutkQHsZnv3WV\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Enjoying the bright sun before winter hits <\/em>&#x1f60e;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coming from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/numed\/\">a tiny, but brilliant university<\/a> (think of cutting a section off the Dental School like a cake and serving it on Malaysia), I was so excited to see and do more things. Joining clubs, attending lectures, experiencing the city, it truly has been overwhelming for me and my cohort. There are some culture shocks, such as having shops close really early (we were used to shops closing at 10pm\u2026) and the toilets not having bidet showers next to them!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Newcastle\u2019s Castle Isn\u2019t so New&#8230;<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>There are positive \u2018shocks\u2019 too. I love and appreciate how beautiful and well preserved the university buildings and the city structures are. The feeling of being in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastlecastle.co.uk\/our-spaces-1\">Newcastle Castle<\/a> constructed with stone concrete in 1177, walking along <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tyne_Bridge\">Tyne Bridge<\/a> held sturdy for over 90 years, and soaking up the atmosphere in uni halls, seeing paintings displaying ancient teachers &#8211; people &#8211; from hundreds of years ago is awe-inspiring. After learning of the foundations that make textbook knowledge, it\u2019s incredibly exciting to hear how those facts came to be proven! Support from staff, especially the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/careers\/\">Careers Services<\/a>, is ample. From recruitment fairs to CV checking, the opportunities are endless!&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also soooo many more people on our course now! We went from 35 people doing Biomed to over 400 people; more than 10 times our group! We\u2019ve all been split up from being a teeny, close bunch to being put separately with huge groups of students we\u2019ve never met before.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students here are lovely and very friendly. I have had a great time interacting and getting to know new people in my year, albeit it\u2019s a bit nerve wracking to initiate some conversations!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Grateful for the present, hopeful for the future.<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/yA0BFr_dCwZC-XigXtEV6jGaMbJie6XYml4IP_JuOnYoVw7HHnxkmP_MyB3M-qCU3UHU1G6TOgotyW774-QdfbQYVHd_iZNN3GxkCRVnz9CJfsfkCL0soBRk9wglW0uD0SkyLZu4\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>My cohort posing in the last NUMed ball<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finishing our degree here is both an immense yet rewarding feat to take on.
