Kokeshi<\/strong><\/p>\n

I am the gaijin<\/em><\/p>\n

on the outside looking in,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

you, intrigued by me,<\/p>\n

see what you want to see:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

a tall nose, a little face, a doll<\/p>\n

to look at, but never embrace,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

a doll you\u2019d carve<\/p>\n

as a kokeshi<\/em>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Against a drop of gold<\/p>\n

I\u2019d stand out,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

wooden<\/p>\n

and fixed in glass,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

never to become<\/p>\n

your world.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You\u2019d box<\/p>\n

my flamboyancy,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

stare at me<\/p>\n

all day:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

your international<\/p>\n

accessory.<\/p>\n

Alexandra Corrin-Tachibana<\/strong> came to writing poetry last year, although she recited poetry from age five, pursuing Speech and Drama training, with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. This year, she was shortlisted for the Fish Poetry Prize 2018. Her poems have appeared in Snakeskin, Typishly and Eunoia Review and in print in Silver Needle Press. In March 2019, she will read her poems at the annual AWP conference, in Oregon.<\/em><\/p>\n
