Suburbia<\/strong><\/p>\n

Outside, the lightning was swift;<\/p>\n

a sudden rain against my skin,<\/p>\n

blurring your features into a single gash.<\/p>\n

The grey weeds<\/p>\n

that spread and withered the yard<\/p>\n

where you buried your black thoughts<\/p>\n

have gone yellow.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Our laundry is hung out as open and raw<\/p>\n

as strips of new skin.<\/p>\n

You sunbathe on the porch<\/p>\n

like a corpse,<\/p>\n

your mouth a blood plum against<\/p>\n

the ruin of your face,<\/p>\n

your body quiet as our empty house.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You have acquired a coldness<\/p>\n

I know<\/p>\n

but not enough<\/p>\n

to own.<\/p>\n

Natalie’s poems have been nominated for The Pushcart Prize twice and this year her poem ‘Anorexia’ was shortlisted for The Anthony Cronin International Poetry Award 2018. She is co-editor of Newcastle University’s\u00a0literary blog Bridges<\/em>\u00a0with fellow student Natalie\u00a0Dunn (MA Creative Writing).
