But his influence extended well beyond the Soviet Union. \u00a0The\u00a0<em>Cahiers du cin\u00e9ma<\/em>\u00a0consistently ranked his films on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/alumnus.caltech.edu\/~ejohnson\/critics\/cahiers.html\">their top ten annual lists<\/a>. Ingmar Bergman went so far as to say, \u201cTarkovsky for me is the greatest [director], the one who invented a new language, true to the nature of film, as it captures life as a reflection, life as a dream.\u201d And Akira Kurosawa\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/people.ucalgary.ca\/~tstronds\/nostalghia.com\/TheTopics\/Kurosawa_on_AT_obit.html\">acknowledged his influence<\/a>\u00a0too, adding, \u201cI love all of Tarkovsky\u2019s films.
