YOUTUBE

I have used Youtube to help with schoolwork on multiple occasions, for example if I am particularly interested in a topic and would like to expand my knowledge on it. Most of the time it involved searching for A level maths topics and tutorials where questions apply mathematical concepts to real life problems, I always find this way of learning most suited to me. To use YouTube is very easy, you simply type in www.youtube.com in the URL bar on an internet browser of your choice and then once on the website you can search for anything of your choice, or browse the various categories on the homepage. Here is a screenshot illustrating this, as you can see I have typed ‘exam solutions’ in the search bar  at the top of the page.

Thus after you can see the amount of videos the search brings up.

There are multiple choices of videos to explore on Youtube for example: sport, film or entertainment. There is also a trending section so you can keep up with what is popular at the moment and stay up to date. An option to like and favourite videos is handy on youtube and from this you can create playlists from this, an example would be if you wanted to listen to a particular type of music a playlist could be created with multiple videos of your chosen genre, or if you saw something particularly amusing and wanted to show friends and family at a later date this is very easy to do. Or perhaps add an educational video to a study playlist as demonstrated below. Three dots beside the video allows you to tick the box of a playlist you wish to add selected video to.youtube-image-2-3

From this then you select the ‘library’ category which is red in color and the video should appear in your chosen playlist ready to enjoy.

An advantage of YouTube is that you can keep up to date with current affairs very easily or hear about news stories that you would not come across usually for example not broadcast on television in the U.K. Also as mentioned previously can help with school or university work, thus help towards a better exam result. A disadvantage though is that people could sometimes over rely on this and perhaps not attend classes, in most cases using YouTube for online tutorials are best used in addition to being taught the material by a lecturer or teacher. You can broadcast your own videos as well on YouTube for example any thoughts you might have on current affairs or a review of a certain product. Which is very useful if you are unsure about purchasing an item you could look at reviews to work out whether it is worth the money or consider from a number of products which is the best to buy. Another advantage you have on YouTube is if you broadcast your own videos you can communicate with other people on the website such as your subscribers. Disadvantages include users spending a lot of time getting distracted from what they originally set out to do on the website in the first place such as for education purposes you could be distracted by watching videos on a hobby of yours, gaming for example. Youtube and channels such as ‘exam solutions’ are a great way to try and grasp concepts that you may not have understood in class by the teacher, it works in almost the same way as a personal tutor. For example a few days before an exam and you couldn’t quite grasp a concept, the YouTube channel can assist by giving you more confidence heading into a an exam. They also provide videos with past exam questions and take you through step by step on these online tutorials making it easier to digest everything the tutor is explaining, which is helpful. Issues do arise however when children have easy access to websites such as Youtube and can see unsuitable content, thus then there is a need for a parental block.
