The interdisciplinary team of researchers and students from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/ceser\/\">CESER<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/ceg\/\">School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/apl\/\">School of Architecture Planning and Landscape<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/curds\/\">Centre for Urban and Regional Development<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/sacs\/\">School of Arts and Cultures<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/mech\/\">School of Mechanical and Systems Engineering<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/sustainability\/\">Newcastle Institute for Research on Sustainability<\/a>\u00a0constructed\u00a0a Caf\u00e9 made from materials described as rubbish or waste.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-349\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ceser\/files\/2013\/06\/Top-view-of-U-Cafe3-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ceser\/files\/2013\/06\/Top-view-of-U-Cafe3-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ceser\/files\/2013\/06\/Top-view-of-U-Cafe3-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ceser\/files\/2013\/06\/Top-view-of-U-Cafe3.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The caf\u00e9 was designed as a means to challenge perceptions around defining waste, the structure created from materials normally discarded into landfill or a recycling stream.\u00a0 Central to up-cycling is a notion of adding value to materials and objects.\u00a0 This process acts to encourage people to question whether items have actually reached the end of their useful life.\u00a0 Defining the quality of this added value is complex and ambiguous, as people can have very different ideas of why to keep an object out of the bin.\u00a0 The central question for the U-Tec team was how to promote up-cycling as a way to encourage people to behave differently towards food and product packaging?\u00a0 Would it be possible, for example, by releasing the hidden value of product packaging (milk cartons, plastic drinks bottles and tin cans) to encourage people to live in a more environmentally sustainable way?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ceser\/files\/2013\/06\/Hadrian-after_sm2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-357\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ceser\/files\/2013\/06\/Hadrian-after_sm2-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ceser\/files\/2013\/06\/Hadrian-after_sm2-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ceser\/files\/2013\/06\/Hadrian-after_sm2-400x300.png 400w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ceser\/files\/2013\/06\/Hadrian-after_sm2.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The Cafe<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>was &#8216;open for business&#8217; between Tuesday 16 and Thursday 18 April and attracted over 150 customers who participated in the research and were entertained by\u00a0recitals from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hadrianprimary.org\/\">Hadrian Primary School&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0upcycled orchestra and by\u00a0\u2018Junk Agency\u2019, a group of Newcastle University musicians who will perform a concert with music made from sampling CDs and cassettes found in rubbish bins and skips.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0U-Caf\u00e9\u00a0initiative\u00a0has\u00a0been awarded the Newcastle University, Best Environmental Initiative of 2013.\u00a0 U-Caf\u00e9\u00a0was designed to gauge a range of possible perceptions around notions of waste, value and utility.
