{"id":11,"date":"2025-05-28T10:42:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-28T09:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/chemical-biology-special-interest-group\/?p=11"},"modified":"2025-08-05T10:43:40","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T09:43:40","slug":"celebrating-north-east-women-in-chemical-biology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/chemical-biology-special-interest-group\/2025\/05\/28\/celebrating-north-east-women-in-chemical-biology\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating North East Women in Chemical Biology"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On a bright afternoon in May, researchers gathered in Newcastle University\u2019s Baddiley-Clark Building for the Chemical Biology Symposium: Spotlight on Women in the North-East, a key event in the Inspiring Women in Chemical Biology seminar series, supported by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biochemistry.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Biochemical Society<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symposium was more than just a scientific meeting \u2014 it was a celebration of the achievements of women in STEM and a platform for fostering meaningful dialogue and collaboration within the Chemical Biology community in the North East of England.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event opened with two captivating talks:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.durham.ac.uk\/staff\/ting-yu-lin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Ting-Yu Lin<\/a>\u00a0(Durham University) presented \u201c<em>Decoding RNA Modifications: From Molecular Mechanisms to Disease Pathways,<\/em>\u201d offering a deep dive into the molecular intricacies of RNA biology.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/cancer\/people\/profile\/kateharris.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Kate Harris<\/a>\u00a0(Newcastle University) followed with \u201c<em>Small Molecules, Shifting States: From Phenotypic Complexity to Microglial Precision,<\/em>\u201d highlighting innovative approaches in neurochemical research.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The event included a series of flash presentations from Newcastle University\u2019s ChemBio PhD students and Post-Doctoral Research Associates, as well as a poster session with coffee, giving early-career researchers a chance to showcase their work and engage with attendees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key highlight of the day was the panel discussion on supporting women in STEM. The panel brought together a diverse group of voices from Newcastle University\u2019s scientific community:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/medical-sciences\/people\/profile\/neilperkins.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prof Neil Perkins<\/a>;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/medical-sciences\/people\/profile\/paulasalgado.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prof Paula Salgado<\/a>;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/nes\/people\/profile\/tommcallister.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Tom McAllister<\/a>; and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kawamuraresearchgroup.com\/harriet-stanway-gordon-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Harriet Stanway-Gordon<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final session featured two more engaging talks:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/medical-sciences\/people\/profile\/annabarwinska-sendra.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Anna Barwinska-Sendra<\/a>\u00a0(Newcastle University) presented \u201c<em>S-layers: The Modular Bacterial Exoskeletons,<\/em>\u201d exploring the structural biology of bacterial surfaces.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunderland.ac.uk\/about\/staff\/pharmacy-pharmaceutical-and-cosmetic-sciences\/stephaniemyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Stephanie Meyers<\/a>\u00a0(Sunderland University) concluded with \u201c<em>Chemical Approaches to Combatting Antimicrobial Resistance,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0addressing one of the most pressing global health challenges.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The event concluded with the announcement of the poster competition winners:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ella Sames (McAllister group, Newcastle University) \u2013 Best PhD Poster\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Zuzanna Pakosz-Stepien (Heddle group, Durham University) \u2013 Best PDRA Poster\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A heartfelt thank you goes to the organizing team \u2014 Filomena Saulino, Kallie Friston, Ella Sames, and Valeria Cobiltean \u2014 for their dedication in making the event a success.
