{"id":116,"date":"2013-10-21T10:06:00","date_gmt":"2013-10-21T09:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/davidrose\/?p=116"},"modified":"2014-10-10T09:44:50","modified_gmt":"2014-10-10T08:44:50","slug":"phi1010-and-phi2003-secondary-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/davidrose\/2013\/10\/21\/phi1010-and-phi2003-secondary-research\/","title":{"rendered":"PHI1010 and PHI2003 Secondary research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In both the stage 2 and stage 3 modules, there is a huge focus of the history of ideas as well as the problems of philosophy.<code> <!--more--><\/code> At the moment, in 101o we are discussing Plato and in 2003 Hobbes. \u00a0It is good practice to have a working knowledge of the context, both philosophical and historical, of thinkers&#8217; positions. The question is how to best acquire such knowledge beyond what is offered in lectures. \u00a0The first port of call used to be the library and the library catalogue whereby relevant introductions and discussions can be found. \u00a0This is still very worthwhile.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, there is now a new thing called the &#8220;internet&#8221; that requires less effort. \u00a0The usual first page to come up is Wikipedia. \u00a0Fair enough, but not appropriate for academic purposes for reasons we have already discussed in lectures. My advice is to look first at the resources offered by our library and always begin with this one:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Blackwell Companion to the Philosophers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blackwellreference.com\/subscriber\/uid=1067\/book?id=g9780631229674_9780631229674\" target=\"_blank\">The Blackwell Companion to the Philosophers<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It contains brief discussions and further reading ideas to introduce a writer. I would expect, if you look at it, to see it on the bottom of your bibliographies for your assessments, cited something like this (this is the entry for Croce, so I doubt it will be this one, but you will find it at the bottom of the webpage with a title such as &#8220;How to cite this article&#8221;):<\/p>\n<p>RECK, ANDREW. &#8220;Croce.&#8221; <em>A Companion to the Philosophers<\/em>. ARRINGTON, ROBERT L. Blackwell Publishing, 2001.
