Seminar<\/a>:\u00a0<\/strong>Get into groups, discuss your arrangements and your challenge, and work towards a set of preliminary project\u00a0aims and prepare for client meeting.<\/p>\n

Team<\/strong>: Reviewed relevant material and prepare to discuss your brief with the client. Write a first reflection for your team’s design log.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

2: User-centred methods\u00a0(in) digital civics<\/strong><\/a><\/td>\nLecture<\/a>:\u00a0<\/strong>What is user-centred design? What simple techniques exist to\u00a0understand the \u2018design space\u2019 and user needs?<\/p>\n

Seminar<\/a>: <\/strong>Meet the client and discuss your project brief. Map stakeholders and discuss any specific process that may be redesigned. \u00a0What criteria does the client apply to a \u2018good\u2019 design.\u00a0Preparation of a\u00a0set of questions<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0to ask your informants.<\/p>\n

Team:\u00a0<\/strong>Get in touch with your informants and gather requirements. Interview schedules and each interview should be documented in blog posts.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

3: Technologies in digital civics<\/strong><\/a><\/td>\nLecture:\u00a0<\/strong>Which technologies are key to enable new forms of interaction in digital civics?<\/p>\n

Seminar:\u00a0<\/strong>Surgery session and project discussions.<\/p>\n

Team: <\/strong>Meet your digital civics peer for mentoring and advice and creative reflection.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Design stage:\u00a0Remix, improve, sketch<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
4: Design thinking and methods \u2014 creativity<\/strong>\u00a0in the design\u00a0process<\/b><\/a><\/td>\nLecture:\u00a0<\/strong>We look at design practice and the need for narrowing down on requirements, we\u2019ll look into options appraisal.<\/p>\n

Seminar:\u00a0<\/strong>Discuss and plan an instant poster of all the evidence collected so far. What concepts \/ options are you considering\u00a0and why?<\/p>\n

Team: <\/strong>Individually search for relevant projects and how they are relevant to your challenge. Try outline what approach you will take.\u00a0Reflect on your chosen option on the design log. Complete your presentation for the interim feedback session.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

5:\u00a0All hands meeting<\/strong><\/a><\/td>\nAll hands:\u00a0<\/strong>Present your interim thoughts and proposed concept; select a concept. Give in-class feedback to your fellow class mates.<\/p>\n

Seminar: <\/strong>Following on from the presentations, we start set our sight on sketching parts of the potential digital service\/app. Before doing so, this session exposes you to additional examples from relevant research projects.<\/p>\n

Seminar<\/strong>: Discussion on the citizens\u2019 concerns in digital services. Start prepare\u00a0a draft story board for your project<\/p>\n

Team:\u00a0<\/strong>Develop a story board for your idea \/ concept (also covered in our seminar for this week) and document your progress by writing a blog post about it (about 300 words)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

7:\u00a0The local government perspective<\/strong><\/a><\/td>\nLecture (w Tony Durcan \u2014 Newcastle City Council<\/em>):\u00a0<\/strong>Organiser concerns \u2014 Civics in planning, government\u2019s role in supporting civic groups.<\/p>\n

Seminar: <\/strong>Discussion on public authority, organiser concerns.\u00a0Complete the\u00a0story boards for your project. What additional research do you need to do to start prototyping?<\/p>\n

Team:\u00a0<\/strong>Refine your prototypes\u2019 requirements based on users concerns voiced in user interviews. Arrange prototype demonstration sessions.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

8: Approaches for prototyping<\/strong><\/a><\/td>\nLecture (w Delvin Vergese):\u00a0<\/strong>Prototyping methods, e.g. paper prototyping (2D); cardboard prototyping (3D). This will be an interactive session.<\/p>\n

Seminar:\u00a0<\/strong>Discuss what type of prototype, artefact you plan to produce and to test on your informants.<\/p>\n

Team:\u00a0<\/strong>Get prototyping with paper, software, or whatever you choose<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

9:\u00a0User testing<\/strong><\/a><\/td>\nLecture (w Delvin Vergese):\u00a0<\/strong>How to organise a user test? In class sharing session on your prototypes, show and display, prepare for the user tests in the next couple of weeks.<\/p>\n

Seminars:\u00a0<\/strong>Discuss how you will test your prototype and concept proposition with user representatives, e.g. video \/ walkthroughs, talk out loud method, acting out \/\/ \u201cbody storming\u201d<\/p>\n
