The Herschel Building lecture theatres and Curtis Auditorium were completed at the weekend and are back in use. A feedback form will be circulated in due course.
Estates & Facilities
Decoration and flooring has been completed in Lecture Theatres 1, 2 and 3 ready for the new seating to be installed on from Monday 9th September.
The flooring in the Curtis Auditorium will be completed next week with the seating installation commencing on 14th September.
The AV installation will continue in the Curtis Auditroium and the projection booths throughout next week with testing and commissioning taking place the week after.
The high level works including new ventilation, lighting, ceilings and decoration are nearing completion. The scaffolding crash-decks will be removed from Thursday 1st August.
Installation of the new acoustic panelling has also commenced in Lecture Theatre 1.
The first fix power and data installation is also complete and once the crash decks are removed, the new raised floors will be installed.
Following strip out and investigative works in the lecture theatres, it has not been possible to channel the floor for new cabling as expected and an alternative solution has been worked up to overcome the unforeseen issue. This will allow the lecterns to be relocated and desk-top power to be installed as originally planned.
The revised proposal includes raising the floor of all three lecture theatres by 100mm to accommodate the new cabling beneath. Ramped access will be installed at all entrances with automatic doors (operated by push pads).
The revised layout can be viewed here: Herschel_Revised Layout
The project remains on programme with the first bookings scheduled for Monday 23rd September 2019.

This week the contractors continued with the strip out works and began installing crash decks in the lecture theatre’s to allow safe access while working at height to replace the ceiling, lighting and AV cabling.
Work has also progressed on modifications to the two projection rooms to allow for high quality projectors to be installed. This will improve viewing angles for the audience in the Curtis Auditorium and enable dual projection in the three lecture theatres.
