Endnote on RAS

At present, the EndNote X/Office 2003 combination is the one most people are using and which we are supporting via RAS. However, ISS are testing Office 2007 on RAS now, so it possible to use the 2007/EndNote X1 combination too. X1 is not yet visible as a separate piece of software in RAS, but you can access it via Word 2007. If you don’t see the Endnote ribbon in Word 2007, you will have to click on the Configure Endnote X1 link in the Bibliography Software or Library Resources folders. This will make the ribbon visible in Word 2007.

  1. Hi Moira,
It might be a good idea to skip X1 as it doesn’t work with the x64 versions of Vista. X2 seems to work fine and offers extra features. Going straight to X2 would also avoid an unnecesary future upgrade.

  2. Hi Chris
The decisions have already been made to go with the 2007/EX1 upgrade I’m afraid and support documentation is already in place. I am advising Vista users to buy X2 if they are buying Endnote, but none of the university clusters have Vista so at present we have to stick with what we have. It’s useful advice though and I’ll add some info to the web pages and as a proper blog post.

  3. Hi Moira,
Thanks for coming along to our School meeting today. The support of the Library is much appreciated. I think the online reading lists have been a particularly good addition to your services.

Anyway, back to the Endnote thread -you asked me to post something on X2. I think X1 will be OK with the Vista 32 bit O/S, the problem is that it won’t work properly with Vista 64 bit O/S. My (64 bit) machine kept hanging with X1. Installing X2 was VERY straightforward, no problems what so ever and it works great. I can’t compare the features of X1 and X2 as X1 worked so badly that I was unable to use it!

In practice moving to X1 probably won’t matter to most users at the moment. There are probably only a few enthusiasts with 64 bit versions of Vista and we are happy to install our own software as necessary. Most users will have Common Desktop, which still has Office 2003 (I think).
In the long run you will end up with more work because you will have two installations to handle rather than one.

  4. Thanks Chris. I will post your comment as a separate blog entry to ensure more people see it. At the moment the Common Desktop is running both 2003/ EX and 2007/EX1, which is what we have agreed to support. It’s very helpful to know about X1,X2 and Vista though and I’ll refer people to your info.
