I have updated the information on the Library web pages about using EndNote with Macs.
The comment below is the text of an email from a Mac user – the Library has no direct experience of the resources she recommends but she has done some exhaustive research on our behalf, thanks Lenette!
Email from a MAC user:
This is a long overdue email about References and Apple computers that do not use Microsoft Office Software.
I’m gonna try to keep it short and just give you a brief summary of the programs that I looked into and what works.
When I wrote to you first I thought I had found a Bibliography software called papers… It turned out not to be a bibliography software but more of an organisation tool. All in all this programme is QUITE AMAZING, I highly reccommed it for anyone that has a MAC. It basically is a filing systems for all your PDF’s. You can separate them into collections, with sub folders, you can automatically have papers from authors or topics downloaded into your library to keep you up to date. It allows you to read you PDF’s full screen and make unlimited notes (reducing the amount of printing you’ll need to do). It has a host of other features I haven’t played around with as yet. It has a fee £24, but students get 40% off so around £17. Its quite worth it. Here is the website:

In terms of actual referencing software, I’ve tried Bookends and Bibdesk (only Bibdesk is free)….I guess they were both pretty OK.. but I wasn’t impressed with either. (both software packages are compatible with Pages 08 word processing software)
I finally tried Sente and I think thats the one I’m going to stick with. I have it right now on a 30 day trial (orginally its $126, or $85 for academics (for use on up to 3 computers). Its fairly straightforward…and I can get my citations and Bibliographies how I want them quite easily. This software is also compatible with pretty much any and every word processing software that can be installed on a MAC. There are quite a number of other features that I have not checked out because I don’t have the time…but I think Sente is the one I would recommend , and its only around £50. Here is the website in case you get anyone else who is interested.
