Known issue with conference papers in IEEE Xplore

Please note that there is a known issue with exporting conference papers from IEEE Xplore. Conference papers are imported into EndNote as conference proceedings, meaning that they display incorrectly when transferred to Word documents. To avoid this, please change any incorrectly labelled conference proceedings to conference papers within your EndNote library, before using in Word. You can do this by double clicking on the reference within EndNote and changing the drop-down menu next to Reference Type to ‘conference paper’.

Please bear with us as we look into this with IEEE Xplore and other colleagues and we will notify you of any changes here.

Problems downloading references through databases on the RAS

A few people have been in touch recently to report problems in downloading references through databases on the RAS. After creating an RIS file to export, instead of getting the option to open the file, people are instead seeing options to Find, Save or Cancel the file, making it impossible to export the references.

The ISS team have been in touch to say this error occurs when the RAS server you access an electronic database through does not have EndNote installed. Recently the ISS team have had to use extra servers to cover demand for RAS access to resources, and not all of them have had EndNote installed. We believe they are looking into the problem and it should be resolved in the near future. In the mean time, if this happens to you when using the RAS please contact the ISS helpline (helpline@ncl.ac.uk) and they will look at the server you are connected to and suggest a fix.

EndNote tab missing in Word and configuration failing

Several people have been in touch to say that they have lost the EndNote tab from their Word documents and are unable to reconfigure EndNote using the normal Start > All programs > Database software > EndNote X4 > Configure EndNote (next, next, finish) fix.

We have reported the problem to ISS who are investigating, and we will inform you here when normal service resumes.

In the mean time, if you have lost your EndNote tab in Word, please use Word and EndNote through the RAS (Remote Application Service), where you should find that your EndNote tab in Word appears as normal.

If you have any further queries or problems then please contact lib-endnotehelp@ncl.ac.uk.

Importing references from 2010 or later

Please note, when importing references from 2010 or later from databases and/or other electronic resources you may find that the date is not brought across correctly and instead the Year field in the record remains blank.

If this happens, please either add the year manually or see this webpage for further information:
http://www.endnote.com/support/faqs/Import/faq20.asp

This problem should be rectified when ISS and the University Library upgrade to the latest version of EndNote in the future so please bear with us whilst we work on this.

‘Invalid string’ error message appears

When I try to use the tools in Word I get an error message that says “Invalid Class String”. How can I fix this?

Please use the link below to go directly to the answer on the EndNote website, follow the instructions and you should be able to use EndNote and Word as normal.
