New Harvard at Newcastle style

The Harvard at Newcastle style was updated on the University network and RAS on 23rd April 2012. If you were already using it, you may notice some minor changes such as:

et al now in italics: et al

spacing in bibliography – references no longer have automatic spacing but you can format your bibliography to insert spaces by clicking on the “expand” arrow in the bottom right of the Bibliography box, selecting the layout tab and choosing “space after” to be one.

Indented references: references are no longer indented, again you can add an indent using the same technique described above.

Author names in citations may display differently. Please contact us if this applies to you.

If you prefer to use the older version of the style to complete your work, you can download it from the Guide

EndNote X4

The University Clusters and RAS will be upgrading to EX4 within the next few weeks. The main versions of EndNote which will then be available on campus will be EX1 (with Office 2007) and EX4 (with Office 2007 or 2010) This means that the Library will no longer offer detailed support for EndNote X and Office 2003, though we will retain the workbooks and other help on our web pages.
All workshops running in future will be based on EX4 whenever possible.

Endnote disappearing from Word ribbon on logoff

We have had a few queries recently about the EndNote tab disappearing from the ribbon in Word each time users logoff. Configuring Endnote does not seem to work. This problem seems to occur for people who are using the Vista operating system. It is mentioned on the (external)Endnote web site as having a few bugs. At the moment the EndNote team in the Library don’t have access to Vista to test this theory, but we are waiting for our technicians to provide it for us, hopefully this week. Once they do, we will test it with both EX1 and the new EX2, because the Endnote pages indicate that the problem is resolved with EX2. IF that is the case, as soon as we are in a position to support EX2 (this means developing workbooks and other supporting resources and expertise), we will be able to recommend to ISS that it is released in the University.

In the meantime, if you work within the RAS environment, rather than directly on the local network, we think this will solve the problem. Please also note that if you buy your own copy of Endnote for use on a personal laptop, you will be provided with EX2.

Changing folder locations in RAS

There seem to be some problems changing folder locations when using Endnote in RAS; an “invalid argument” box keeps popping up. I don’t know why it is happening and I have asked ISS to look at it for us. However, I have discovered that if you keep clicking ok every time the “invalid argument” box pops up, you can eventually change the folder location from W to H. I kept persevering and managing to get one step further after several “invalid argument” messages each time. The last step I actually had to highlight a style in my H styles folder in order for it to work, but it did work.

Postscript
ISS have looked into this problem for us and are not able to resolve it because “Endnote is not supported on a Terminal Server as the software vendor cannot be sure it will work as required” So the fact that it’s working at all is a bonus! It looks like we will just have to click “ok” 8 times every time we need to change the path.

EndNote and Vista

There are known problems with EndNote X1 for people who use Vista and as we don’t have Vista on any Library PCs I am unable to test it. However, I am reliably informed by Chris Hicks that EX2 works very well with Vista and I’m copying here his comment on this: “I think X1 will be OK with the Vista 32 bit O/S, the problem is that it won’t work properly with Vista 64 bit O/S. My (64 bit) machine kept hanging with X1. Installing X2 was VERY straightforward, no problems what so ever and it works great. I can’t compare the features of X1 and X2 as X1 worked so badly that I was unable to use it!”
If you have a university machine running Vista then you can upgrade to EX2 by asking your School technician.
