‘Invalid string’ error message appears

When I try to use the tools in Word I get an error message that says “Invalid Class String”. How can I fix this?

Please use the link below to go directly to the answer on the EndNote website, follow the instructions and you should be able to use EndNote and Word as normal.

Changing folder locations in RAS

There seem to be some problems changing folder locations when using Endnote in RAS; an “invalid argument” box keeps popping up. I don’t know why it is happening and I have asked ISS to look at it for us. However, I have discovered that if you keep clicking ok every time the “invalid argument” box pops up, you can eventually change the folder location from W to H. I kept persevering and managing to get one step further after several “invalid argument” messages each time. The last step I actually had to highlight a style in my H styles folder in order for it to work, but it did work.

Postscript
ISS have looked into this problem for us and are not able to resolve it because “Endnote is not supported on a Terminal Server as the software vendor cannot be sure it will work as required” So the fact that it’s working at all is a bonus! It looks like we will just have to click “ok” 8 times every time we need to change the path.

EndNote and Vista

There are known problems with EndNote X1 for people who use Vista and as we don’t have Vista on any Library PCs I am unable to test it. However, I am reliably informed by Chris Hicks that EX2 works very well with Vista and I’m copying here his comment on this: “I think X1 will be OK with the Vista 32 bit O/S, the problem is that it won’t work properly with Vista 64 bit O/S. My (64 bit) machine kept hanging with X1. Installing X2 was VERY straightforward, no problems what so ever and it works great. I can’t compare the features of X1 and X2 as X1 worked so badly that I was unable to use it!”
If you have a university machine running Vista then you can upgrade to EX2 by asking your School technician.

Endnote on RAS

At present, the EndNote X/Office 2003 combination is the one most people are using and which we are supporting via RAS. However, ISS are testing Office 2007 on RAS now, so it possible to use the 2007/EndNote X1 combination too. X1 is not yet visible as a separate piece of software in RAS, but you can access it via Word 2007. If you don’t see the Endnote ribbon in Word 2007, you will have to click on the Configure Endnote X1 link in the Bibliography Software or Library Resources folders. This will make the ribbon visible in Word 2007.

Using EndNote with LaTeX and BibTeX

We have had several queries recently about whether people who use LaTeX rather than Word can benefit from using EndNote. BibTeX is a bibliographic tool which works with LaTeX in the same way as EndNote does with Word. You may need to use EndNote as a way of downloading references from online databases to then convert into BibTeX. Jenny Campbell has added a tip to our web pages which explains this in more detail.
