Endnote and Word combinations

Some PC clusters and individual PCs are now running MS 2007. We are also keen to upgrade from Endnote X to Endnote X1. The policy will be that all clusters running MS07 will also run EX1, MS03 clusters will run EX. Library staff will be producing documentation for the MS07/EX1 combination as soon as possible and will also support MS03/EX. If you are currently working with a different combination, we recommend you upgrade to MS07/EX1 if possible.

Endnote and Word 2007

If the EndNote Toolbar is not present in Word 2007 then you can create it by
first closing down Word, then going to Start, Programs, Database Software, EndNote X, Set Up Your EndNote Toolbar In Word. Open Word 2007 again and you should find the Endnote toolbar in the Add-Ins ribbon entry.

Problems with links in documents

We have just solved an interesting query in which an unformatted document was not formatting Endnote references correctly, was duplicating tables and producing error messages such as “Not a valid bookmark self-reference”. This seems to be connected to the document containing other dynamic links to tables and figures. Endnote was trying to convert all these links into citations. The solution was to break the links to the tables and figures by going to Edit, Links, highlight all the links and click Break link. Reformatting then works perfectly.
This means that if you want to use dynamic links to data, you should leave formatting your references as the very last thing before publishing your work (ie disable instant formatting), so that you can convert the other links into static links first.

EndNote Clinic – issues raised

Just to report back on a few questions to which I wasn’t sure of the answers in the EndNote workshop today:
Associated data files do automatically transfer when libraries are merged or references are copied and pasted between libraries.
There is not a limit on downloading from Ovid databases
The download from JSTOR in RAS is working ok.

Endnote and RAS (again!)

I have been asked several times about transferring files to and from a USB pen drive when using Endnote via RAS. It seems the solution is simple – you must plug the pen drive in BEFORE you start up RAS and it will then appear in the list of drives on RAS, with a $ sign after the drive letter. Please note that the drive letter for the USB drive will vary on different computers.

Numbered citations not appearing in consecutive order

If you are using a Word document which has citations inside of text boxes, EndNote formats the citations appearing in text boxes first. This means that your in-text citations do not begin with 1. The suggested workaround for this is to convert the text boxes to frames.
Right click on the text box which contains the citation and choose ‘Format’, then ‘Text Box’. Select the Text Box tab and click ‘Convert to Frame’, then click ‘OK’ to confirm the conversion. Now format the bibliography, this should solve the problem.

Informal EndNote feedback needed

I am writing a report about how the Library supports Endnote and what we do. I can give it my perception of how it all works, but it would be good to have some feedback from you, so if you have time to add comments to the blog, or email your thoughts to me (moira.bent@ncl) that would be very helpful. For example, are the web pages helpful, have you generally had help when you needed it, have training sessions been useful, what would make it better, what don’t you like, what do you like (both about endnote itself and the service the Library provides) etc etc. Your feedback will help me make the report more realistic and also help me plan how we might change and develop our support in future.

Newcastle Law School style

In collaboration with staff in the Law School, we have developed a new EndNote style which Law students can use to manage their references in the way in which the School requires. As this is a complex style, we’d welcome any feedback on how it is working and on any improvements we can make
