Another reminder that there is a glitch which we haven’t been able to solve which means Endnote and Word don’t work together on RAS if you open Endnote first. However, they work fine if you open Word first – it will then automatically open Endnote and you can then connect to Endnote via the Endnote toolbar in Word as normal.
Common Endnote problems: Generic service error
Just a reminder that if you have used an earlier version of Endnote, when you use Endnote X you may get a messsage saying “Generic Service Error” – often when downloading from external resources, but also during other operations. You can usually fix this by running the “Fix my endnote profile” script – in RAS it’s in the Biobliog software folder and on the main clusters go to Start, Database Software, Endnote, Profile fix.
New styles on RAS
If you use Endnote on RAS, you’ll notice that it has been upgraded to include even more styles – 3287 instead of 2314. In the process our special amended styles have been overwritten, but they will be back very soon. You can download Harvard at Newcastle from our web pages if you need to in the meantime. The network version of Endnote will also be upgraded to include the new styles very soon.
Endnote and Web of Science
When using WoS with Internet Explorer, when you try to download records to EndNote it sometimes seems as if the search hasn’t worked and just hangs. This is because IE blocks the site – look carefully and you’ll see an extra bar has appeared near the top of the screen which says “IE has blocked this site from downloading files to your computer” Click for Options and choose “Download the file”. Then you have to repeat your search. This doesn’t happen using the Firefox browser. I’m not technical enough to know if this can be fixed, but I’m asking!
EndNote have released a new version. It is called Version X1
We are currently not planning to make this available on the network across campus or via RAS at this time. However we are interested in some of the extra functionality it brings therefore if any further developments occur we will keep you posted.
According to ISS, anyone who bought Version X from Information Systems & Services will only qualify for a free upgrade if Version X was purchased within a month of the release of the new version otherwise they need to buy a new licence. However we are not currently supporting X1, therefore it is recommended not to upgrade at this time. If anyone who has purchased their own copy of X and would like the latest version please visit ISS in Claremont Tower for further information.
Podcasts for EndNote
We were recommended a URL which includes some podcasts for EndNote. I have listened to both of them featured on the Comupting and Information Services at Texas A & M University. There maybe some scope for us to do something similiar in the future, so would welcome any thoughts from users of EndNote as to whether they think it will be worthwhile.
The beginning of the podcasts refer specifically to how to access EndNote on the desktop at Texas so you may want to skip past that part, but the rest seems useful.

Other Blogs
I have just discovered another blog dedicated solely to EndNote. This is available from the University of Queensland in Australia. It looks like it has some useful links and information regarding EndNote, so it might be worth a look.
If you discover any other useful blogs for EndNote please let us know and we will add them to our resources.

Downloading Instructions for Metapress and Informaworld
New instructions for downloading from two electronic journal collections will be available from our webpages in the next few days.
They will be for :
Informaworld
The new home for Taylor and Francis titles. We have full text access to approximately 1300 titles starting from 1997.
and
Metapress
Searchable database providing access to a range of titles predominantly published by Taylor & Francis.
Most ej titles will move over to the new Informaworld platform but in the meantime both instructions for downloading will be available.
Superscripting numbers in in-text references
In order to change a numbered style to use superscript numbers you must first follow the instructions for ‘style editing and saving’ from
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/library/endnote_tips_style.php
Once you have saved the style you wish to edit onto your file space, you should select:
>Edit
>Output styles
>Edit (style name of your choice)
Under the citations heading select
>templates
Highlight ‘Bibliography number’ and hold down the Ctrl and shift keys and select +, this will superscript the bibliography number in in-text citations when using this style. You can also delete any brackets which appear around the bibliography number from here too.
Inserting blind references (using an author date style)
I was recently asked about inserting ‘blind’ references so thought this might be useful …
In order to have references appear in your bibliography which do not appear as in-text citations you should insert these references separately, perhaps at the end of your document. Put the cursor at the very beginning of the author date entries and right click, you will get a menu which includes ‘edit citation’ at the bottom, select this and exclude the author and date. The in-text citation remains but you can no longer see it, so the reference does appear in the automated bibliography along with anything that does have a visible in-text citation.
