{"id":515,"date":"2018-11-20T14:00:44","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T14:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/fmsdiversity\/?p=515"},"modified":"2018-11-01T15:38:25","modified_gmt":"2018-11-01T15:38:25","slug":"student-equality-and-diversity-bursaries-an-invitation-to-inclusion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/fmsdiversity\/2018\/11\/20\/student-equality-and-diversity-bursaries-an-invitation-to-inclusion\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Equality and Diversity Bursaries: An Invitation to Inclusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To find out about another great project which has been funded by\u00a0<em>the <a href=\"https:\/\/newcastle.sharepoint.com\/hub\/medical\/equality\/Pages\/Funding.aspx\">Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Fund<\/a>\u00a0(EDIF),\u00a0I spoke to<\/em>\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/sme\/staff\/profile\/lauradelgaty.html#background\">Dr Laura Delgaty<\/a> <\/em> and student, Jenny Peal, about Student Equality and Diversity Bursaries.<\/p>\n<p>The project, led by Laura Delgaty, who&#8217;s part of the School of Medical Education, aims to\u00a0<em>&#8220;support and encourage student led small scale equality and diversity research at Newcastle University&#8221;.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-517 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/fmsdiversity\/files\/2018\/09\/bursary-blog-300x220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/fmsdiversity\/files\/2018\/09\/bursary-blog-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/fmsdiversity\/files\/2018\/09\/bursary-blog-768x563.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/fmsdiversity\/files\/2018\/09\/bursary-blog.jpg 838w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/>The project had been awarded \u00a32,500 from the EDIF, which was distributed between 6 students in the form of bursaries.<\/p>\n<p>Three bursaries of \u00a3250 each were awarded to Undergraduate students from each of the three Schools, and a further three scholarships of \u00a3500 were awarded to Postgraduate students, again one from each of the three Schools.<\/p>\n<p>One of the students who was provided with an Equality and Diversity Bursary was Postgraduate student Jenny Peal, from the School of Medical Education.<\/p>\n<p>Jenny&#8217;s project was aided substantially by the bursary she was awarded. She studied 15 female cardiologists who worked and trained in a male-dominated environment, focusing on the impact this environment had on their success and development. The process of writing up the interview transcripts could take up to 5 hours at a time.
