The event will be a talk and discussion with Professor Ian Banks on men&#8217;s health, entitled &#8220;Does the Y chromosome seriously damage your health?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Every year, on the 19th of November, <a href=\"http:\/\/ukmensday.org.uk\/\">International Men&#8217;s Day<\/a> is celebrated by over 60 countries around the world. It gives us all an opportunity to think about\u00a0men&#8217;s and boy&#8217;s health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting positive male role models.<\/p>\n<p>It encourages people of all genders to come together and celebrate men and boys in all their diversity, but also to consider how we can work to address issues facing males today, such as:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-722 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/fmsdiversity\/files\/2018\/11\/IMD-Poster-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/fmsdiversity\/files\/2018\/11\/IMD-Poster-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/fmsdiversity\/files\/2018\/11\/IMD-Poster-768x1086.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/fmsdiversity\/files\/2018\/11\/IMD-Poster-724x1024.jpg 724w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/fmsdiversity\/files\/2018\/11\/IMD-Poster.jpg 1512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The high male suicide rate<\/li>\n<li>The challenges faced by boys and men at all stages of education including attainment<\/li>\n<li>The challenges faced by the most marginalised men and boys in society (for instance, homeless men, boys in care and the high rate of male deaths in custody)<\/li>\n<li>Male victims of violence, including sexual violence<\/li>\n<li>The challenges faced by men as parents, particularly new fathers and separated fathers<\/li>\n<li>Male victims and survivors of sexual abuse, rape, sexual exploitation, domestic abuse, forced marriage, honour-based crime, stalking and slavery<\/li>\n<li>The negative portrayal of men, boys and fathers<\/li>\n<li>Men\u2019s health, shorter life expectancy and workplace deaths<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is this final issue which is the focus of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/ihs\/events\/item\/internationalmensdaydoestheychromosomeseriouslydamageyourhealth.html\">Professor Ian Banks&#8217; talk<\/a> on the 19th November. He will examine some of the myths surrounding men&#8217;s health, including the question of what is &#8220;avoidable&#8221; male death and ill health, and the reasons for the huge variation in morbidity and mortality between women and men, and also between men themselves.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-720 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/fmsdiversity\/files\/2018\/11\/Ian-Banks-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/fmsdiversity\/files\/2018\/11\/Ian-Banks-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/fmsdiversity\/files\/2018\/11\/Ian-Banks-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/fmsdiversity\/files\/2018\/11\/Ian-Banks-768x766.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/fmsdiversity\/files\/2018\/11\/Ian-Banks.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/>Prof Banks is an A&amp;E doctor and a GP. He&#8217;s also\u00a0the BMA&#8217;S official spokesman on men\u2019s health issues, president of the European Men\u2019s Health Forum and former president of the England &amp; Wales Men\u2019s Health Forum. He has written numerous books, including\u00a0the <em>Haynes Workshop Manuals <\/em>on men, women, babies, and sex,\u00a0and he was the Medical Editor for <em>The Men\u2019s Health Magazine<\/em> for six years.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The talk is at 12.30 &#8211; 2.00pm on Monday 19th November in L2.8 of the Medical School. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>It is open to all members of staff, regardless of gender, and will appeal to anyone interested in male or female health, as well as those who wants to show their support for International Men&#8217;s Day.
