As the World Literacy Summit moves online this week due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we thought it would be a good idea to focus on SDG 4, inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning.

The 2020 World Literacy Summit 2020 is the fourth summit hosted by the World Literacy Foundation. It combines speeches from international literacy specialists, including NGO leaders, academics and literacy entrepreneurs. Dr Humble researches the ‘global citizenship’ phenomenon.
Global citizenship is a combination of the themes of justice, equality,
diversity, identity, belonging and sustainable development. Steve is interested
in how children around the world perceive themselves as global citizens, and
conducted his research with children in Ghana.

The children involved in the research overwhelmingly
identified as global citizens, even though there was little GCE implemented in
their school curriculum. Dr Humble’s research proves to us how important it is
that we implemented global citizenship education into our school curriculums to
help the fight for sustainable development.

Dr Steve Humble

One of the NGOs particularly involved in this week’s events
is the Global Partnership for Education.
