What is H5P?

NEWSFLASH 26/7/21! We now have the go ahead to run a fully supported H5P pilot that integrates with Canvas. See Coming Soon: Interactive Content Made Easy with H5P | Learning and Teaching @ Newcastle University (ncl.ac.uk)

H5P is a simple and free tool for authoring a range of types of interactive content. It’s easy to use and you don’t need to invest enormous amounts of time to get up to speed. (But, obviously, its not going to be as slick or sophisticated as Articulate Storyline.)

This WordPress site has the free H5P plugin installed, people defined as authors on this blog can create H5P widgits which can then be published in Canvas or Blackboard.

1. create content in blogs.ncl.ac.uk/h5p, test your widget, grab the embed code, publish in Canvas via HTML editor

Where can I see some examples?

You can see all of the content types at https://h5p.org/content-types-and-applications.

We haven’t made all of these content types available to authors on this site – if there’s a missing content type it will be because of one of the following reasons:

  • it doesn’t meet our accessibility requirements
  • it doesn’t work reliably
  • there are “native” applications/approaches in Canvas/Office365 that we’d prefer authors to use

See our examples and notes on the Examples page – it’s a bit short at the moment – we are adding to this as we look over our initial investigations (.docx).

Experments is our playpen – things we are trying/works in progress.

Is there a user-guide?

Yes, we have one as a work in progress: its a Word online document
