{"id":303,"date":"2017-03-06T16:56:07","date_gmt":"2017-03-06T16:56:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/hassimpact\/?p=303"},"modified":"2017-03-06T16:56:07","modified_gmt":"2017-03-06T16:56:07","slug":"being-bold-for-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/hassimpact\/2017\/03\/06\/being-bold-for-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Being bold for change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week various events are happening around Newcastle University campus and the city to celebrate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalwomensday.com\/\"><u>International Women\u2019s Day<\/u><\/a> (IWD) on Wednesday 8<sup>th<\/sup> March under the theme of <strong>#beboldforchange<\/strong> which also prioritises the call to action worldwide for speeding up gender parity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/hassimpact\/files\/2017\/03\/IHS-IWD-event-flyer-9.3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-305\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/hassimpact\/files\/2017\/03\/IHS-IWD-event-flyer-9.3-300x90.jpg\" alt=\"working together \" width=\"300\" height=\"90\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/hassimpact\/files\/2017\/03\/IHS-IWD-event-flyer-9.3-300x90.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/hassimpact\/files\/2017\/03\/IHS-IWD-event-flyer-9.3-768x231.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/hassimpact\/files\/2017\/03\/IHS-IWD-event-flyer-9.3-500x150.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/hassimpact\/files\/2017\/03\/IHS-IWD-event-flyer-9.3.jpg 949w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/reports.weforum.org\/global-gender-gap-report-2016\/infographics\/\"><u>World Economic Forum<\/u><\/a> (WEF) report on gender and inequality shows why the issue of parity still remains vital. The findings make for sobering reading, particularly the part that predicts that the pay gap won\u2019t close entirely until <strong>2186<\/strong>.\u00a0This is highly dependent on region too. In Europe the gap for equal pay is 47 years however other figures are much worse. In North America, the statistics are in retrograde and in South Asia the WEF predict it will be <strong>1000 years<\/strong> before the pay gap is closed.<\/p>\n<p>The events happening across the North-East highlight the different ways that everyone can <strong>#beboldforchange<\/strong> and find motivations in different sources past and present. Tomorrow there\u2019s a lecture on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iwne.org\/\"><u>Inspirational Women of the North East<\/u><\/a> by Prof Helen Berry, between 1.30-3pm at the Kings Hall. \u00a0On International Women\u2019s Day itself <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/ageing\/staff\/profile\/karenrossnclacuk.html#research\"><u>Professor Karen Ross<\/u><\/a> as part of her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/hss\/impact\/iaa\"><u>ESRC IAA<\/u><\/a> project \u2018NOT Acting Our Age: Older Women Challenging Gender Stereotypes and Celebrating Life\u2019 will be organising a flash mob at 12 noon in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.graingermarket.org.uk\/\"><u>Grainger Market<\/u><\/a>. Later on\u00a0there is a lecture at Newcastle Business School between 5pm and 7.30 entitled &#8216;Celebrating Women in the World of Work: Smashing the Glass Ceiling\u2019, details of which can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/forms.ncl.ac.uk\/view.php?id=11814\"><u>here<\/u><\/a>.
