Welcome!

This is the website for a British Academy project on Heritage Portuguese in the United Kingdom. Did you know that, according to the 2020 Schools Census, 20% of children and young people in English state schools and nurseries are multilingual – speaking a language other than English at home? Portuguese is the 9th most widely spoken language amongst these multilingual young people but we know very little about the varieties of Portuguese they speak.

The 43,803 Portuguese speakers (of Africa, Brazilian and European origins) in English schools are concentrated mainly in London but also in the East and Southeast of England (Pina Almeida & Corkill 2010, Souza & Evans 2015).

If you are a member of one of the UK Lusophone community, please get in touch with us as you may be eligible to participate in our project!
