The School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape held a lively and productive one day symposium in June 2013 at Newcastle University to explore the role of design in alternative housing models.

The symposium investigated the role of design throughout the delivery process of a variety of models, such as housing co-operatives, co-housing, self-build, community led housing projects, low impact alternatives and social housing and contextualise it into the paradigm of neighbourhood planning.

The event, organised by Georgia Giannopoulou and Konrad Miciukiewicz of the School, and Mark Siddall of LEAP architects, was held in Culture Lab on Wednesday 26 June and presentations were given by a number of stakeholders, from representatives from the city council, to practitioners, to members of community groups.

Presentations focused on a range of case studies and hands-on experience of professionals who have been involved in such schemes, with discussion afterwards.  The day concluded with round table discussions on a number of key topics and feedback from the event was excellent, with some comments being:
