Further details of the projects and guidelines on how to apply, will be posted in the next few weeks. \u00a0However, if you would like further details about the projects NOW you can contact the named supervisor directly or the ICaMB Postgraduate Tutor\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/camb\/staff\/profile\/tim.cheek\" target=\"_blank\">Dr Tim Cheek<\/a> (email\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:tim.cheek@ncl.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\">tim.cheek@ncl.ac.uk<\/a>). \u00a0<em>In exceptional circumstances, especially if the prospective applicant already has interviews arranged at other institutions, we can expedite and fast track the interview process (please contact Tim Cheek for more details if this applies to you).\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eukaryotic Cell Biology<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The last year has seen a lot of recruitment activity in ICaMB, one result of which was the appointment of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/the-new-icamb-recruits\/\" target=\"_blank\">three new PIs<\/a> as part of our Independent Researcher Establishment Scheme (IRES). We introduced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/the-new-icamb-recruits\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr Owen Davies, Dr Niall Kenneth and Dr Josana Rodriguez<\/a> recently. \u00a0Doing PhD research with a new PI offers the chance to work at the bench directly with a young and enthusiastic scientist at the top of their game. \u00a0Many &#8216;first&#8217; PhD students go on to achieve great things. Both PIs are investigating the important area of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oxidative_stress\" target=\"_blank\">oxidative stress<\/a> signalling (relevant to many diseases, including cancer) using the model organisms <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saccharomyces_cerevisiae\" target=\"_blank\">S<em>accharomyces cerevisiae<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caenorhabditis_elegans\" target=\"_blank\">Caenorhabditis elegans<\/a><\/em> and\u00a0publish routinely in high impact journals, such as \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22245228\" target=\"_blank\">Molecular Cell<\/a>. A PhD in either lab provides an opportunity to work at the cutting edge of research into eukaryotic cell signalling.<\/p>\n<p>Title of Studentship: How does the regulation of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ubiquitin\" target=\"_blank\">ubiquitin<\/a>\/ubiquitin-like pathways determine cellular responses to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reactive_oxygen_species\" target=\"_blank\">reactive oxygen species<\/a>?<br \/>\nFunding Source:BBSRC DTP<br \/>\nSupervisor:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/camb\/staff\/profile\/brian.morgan\" target=\"_blank\">Prof Brian Morgan<\/a> (email\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:brian.morgan@ncl.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\">brian.morgan@ncl.ac.uk<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Title of Studentship: Understanding how <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hydrogen_peroxide\" target=\"_blank\">hydrogen peroxide<\/a> signals control cell growth, survival and ageing<br \/>\nFunding Source: BBSRC DTP<br \/>\nSupervisor:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/camb\/staff\/profile\/elizabeth.veal\" target=\"_blank\">Dr Elizabeth Veal<\/a> (email\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:elizabeth.veal@ncl.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\">elizabeth.veal@ncl.ac.uk<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Host-Microbe Interactions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The next two positions complement each other, with one exploring the host&#8217;s reaction to microbes while the second focusses on the microbe&#8217;s response to the host. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/camb\/staff\/profile\/judith.hall\" target=\"_blank\">Dr Judith Hall <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/camb\/staff\/profile\/david.bolam\" target=\"_blank\">Dr David Bolam<\/a> are both key members of ICaMB and have a strong track record as PhD supervisors.
