{"id":2972,"date":"2014-04-24T10:52:30","date_gmt":"2014-04-24T09:52:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/?p=2972"},"modified":"2014-04-24T10:52:30","modified_gmt":"2014-04-24T09:52:30","slug":"deep-impact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/deep-impact\/","title":{"rendered":"Deep Impact"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_2973\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/04\/Bread-on-stand.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2973\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2973\" alt=\"Alginate bread on a pedestal under show-biz lights\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/04\/Bread-on-stand-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/04\/Bread-on-stand-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/04\/Bread-on-stand.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2973\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alginate bread on a pedestal under show-biz lights.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Another excellent post by ICaMB&#8217;s Dr Matthew Wilcox as the fame of alginate spreads and seaweed bread goes on tour!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Well, I was kindly invited\u00a0along to the BBSRC Fostering Impact awards ceremony in London a couple of weeks ago and although I wasn\u2019t up for anything, Newcastle University were.<\/p>\n<p>Fostering impact is a scheme run by the <a title=\"BBSRC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbsrc.ac.uk\/business\/fostering-innovation\/impact-incentive-index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">BBSRC<\/a>\u00a0to capture the economic and social impact of research funded by them.\u00a0 There are three competitions that fit the fostering impact scheme; &#8216;innovator of the year&#8217;, &#8216;activating impact&#8217; and &#8216;excellence with impact&#8217;.\u00a0 The first is for an individual researcher, the second is for the knowledge exchange teams and the final award is for research organisations (runs from 2013 \u2013 2015).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/04\/Outside-event.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2974 alignleft\" alt=\"Outside event\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/04\/Outside-event-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/04\/Inside-event.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2975\" alt=\"Inside event\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/04\/Inside-event-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The knowledge exchange and commercialisation team at Newcastle University has changed substantially over the past couple of years. \u00a0What was once a centralised Business Development Directorate has now become the Research Enterprise Service, comprised of three teams, each embedded in one of the Faculties.\u00a0 Each Institute or School now has their own dedicated business development manager (BDM), with ICAMB\u2019s BDM being <a title=\"Laura Rush\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/res\/about\/staff\/profile\/laura.rush\" target=\"_blank\">Laura Rush<\/a> (who is very nice).\u00a0 They are now much easier to contact, whether it\u2019s just a quick question or the drafting of patents.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2976\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/04\/Bread-at-home.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2976\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2976\" alt=\"Home baking\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/04\/Bread-at-home-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/04\/Bread-at-home-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/04\/Bread-at-home.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2976\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Home baking practice.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Newcastle&#8217;s application for the Activating Impact award was submitted back in October 2013 and used the wonderful research done by the beautiful people of ICAMB as its basis.\u00a0 In January the RES team found out that they had successfully made it to the final five (from 18) and through to the grand final in London.\u00a0 Newcastle was up against the knowledge exchange and commercialisation teams from King\u2019s college London, Queen Mary University of London, University College London and University of Aberdeen. One of the requirements of the competition was to bring along someone to the final who had worked with RES, a \u2018user\u2019 (according to the BBSRC).\u00a0 They also wanted an iconic object?!\u00a0 <a title=\"skinny seaweed\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/skinny-seaweed\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alginate bread\u00a0<\/a>it was then.\u00a0 Back in the kitchen I went. How many loaves would I need to feed the people there? Demonstrating what Newcastle\u00a0does well, how BDM\u2019s have been embedded into each institute and also what they would do with the money if we won (\u00a3100k).\u00a0 He also described the additional internal funds that are available to help activate impact.\u00a0 <a title=\"FMS funding\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/fundingtoolkit\/enterprise\/proofconceptandpatentsupport.htm\" target=\"_blank\">FMS has two funds available<\/a>; the first is to help with data collection for translational grant applications, the second is to support further claims in patent applications.\u00a0 The two internal grants can both potentially support a post doc salary for three months, plus consumables.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2978\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/04\/Mosquito.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2978\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2978 \" alt=\"Dengue fever carrying mosquito\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/04\/Mosquito-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2978\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dengue fever carrying mosquito.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The awards ceremony combined\u00a0the &#8216;innovator of the year&#8217; and &#8216;activating impact&#8217;.\u00a0 I got a glitzy stand for my bread and also had the chance to look around the other pretty amazing stuff that was on display, like Dr Luke Alphey&#8217;s work.<a title=\"Luke Alphey's work\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbsrc.ac.uk\/news\/people-skills-training\/2014\/140321-n-luke-alphey-wins-fostering-innovation.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"> Luke ended up being named both social innovator and overall innovator of the year<\/a> for his work on the genetic control of pests, including the dengue fever carrying mosquito.<\/p>\n<p>I even got to meet the new (ish) CEO of the BBSRC, <a title=\"Professor Jackie Hunter\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbsrc.ac.uk\/organisation\/structures\/executive\/chief-executive.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Jackie Hunter<\/a>, who was definitely not snapped stuffing free stuff into her bag!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2983\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/04\/CEO-BBSRC.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2983\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2983 \" alt=\"BBSRC's CEO Jackie Hunter enjoying the exhibition\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/04\/CEO-BBSRC-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/04\/CEO-BBSRC-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/04\/CEO-BBSRC.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2983\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On the right BBSRC&#8217;s CEO Professor Jackie Hunter enjoying the exhibition.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Unfortunately Newcastle did not win, but being down to the last five of the competition is brilliant and should give confidence to ICAMB scientists that when help is required in achieving impact (social or economic), we have a great team to help.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Queen Mary University\" href=\"http:\/\/www.qmul.ac.uk\/media\/news\/items\/126073.html?utm_source=Homepage&amp;utm_medium=Shoutbox&amp;utm_campaign=Slide1\" target=\"_blank\">Queen Mary University of London<\/a>,\u00a0whose entry was also being supported by a previous BBSRC Enterprise Fellow\u00a0and <a title=\"King's College London\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/newsevents\/news\/newsrecords\/2014\/March\/Kings-wins-Activating-Impact-award.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">King\u2019s College London<\/a>,\u00a0ended up being joint winners each scooping \u00a3100k.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps if a few more of the world leading researchers in ICaMB engaged with the Enterprise team, they might not have to only take some eejit and his bread to the competition next year and increase NU&#8217;s chance of winning!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Another excellent post by ICaMB&#8217;s Dr Matthew Wilcox as the fame of alginate spreads and seaweed bread goes on tour!
