Here, the CBCB&#8217;s <a title=\"Heath Murray\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/camb\/staff\/profile\/heath.murray\" target=\"_blank\">Heath Murray<\/a> and <a title=\"Kevin Waldron\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/camb\/staff\/profile\/kevin.waldron\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Waldron<\/a> tell us about\u00a0what happened at\u00a0the event.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of the aspects of ICaMB that makes it a unique institute is the <a title=\"Centre for Bacterial Cell Biology\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/cbcb\/\" target=\"_blank\">Centre for Bacterial Cell Biology (CBCB)<\/a>, a group of researchers who are focused on understanding fundamental biological questions using bacteria as model organisms. The CBCB was founded by <a title=\"Jeff Errington\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/cbcb\/staff\/profile\/jeff.errington\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Jeff Errington FRS <\/a>and is the world\u2019s first major research centre with a focus on bacterial cell biology. Since its inception, CBCB has relocated to a purpose-built \u00a330 million facility in the <a title=\"Baddiley-Clark Building Virtual Tour\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/cbcb\/about\/tour\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Baddiley-Clark Building<\/a>, and has grown to include more than 20 different research groups. In a relatively short time, CBCB members have made outstanding contributions to our understanding of numerous aspects of fundamental cellular processes in a wide range of bacteria.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3071\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/07\/CBCBsympPicture1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3071\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3071\" alt=\"Prof Kenn Gerdes from the CBCB discusses how bacteria can form dormant variants that evade the immune defence response. \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/07\/CBCBsympPicture1-300x225.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3071\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prof Kenn Gerdes from the CBCB discusses how bacteria can form dormant variants that evade the immune defence response.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In order to recognise the success and the breadth of science being generated in the Centre, we recently held the inaugural <a title=\"CBCB Symposium\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/cbcb\/research\/symposium\/\" target=\"_blank\">CBCB Symposium<\/a> on July 9-10. More than 120 members of the CBCB community participated in the two-day event, underscoring the critical mass of researchers at Newcastle University working within the field. This excellent turnout certainly contributed to the overall success of the event.<\/p>\n<p>Research themes covered by talks from group leaders in the CBCB included sporulation, infection, persistence, biofilms, metabolism, motility, and morphogenesis. We also heard about the emerging subject of synthetic biology, where bacterial organisms will be programmed much like computers to perform discrete biological tasks.The CBCB Symposium was highlighted by inspirational talks from three distinguished external scientists, <a title=\"Jan Lowe\" href=\"http:\/\/www2.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk\/group-leaders\/h-to-m\/jan-lowe\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jan L\u00f6we<\/a> (<a title=\"MRC-LMB\" href=\"http:\/\/www2.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Laboratory of Molecular Biology<\/a>, Cambridge), <a title=\"Mervyn Bibb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jic.ac.uk\/scientists\/mervyn-bibb\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mervyn Bibb<\/a> (<a title=\"John Innes Centre\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jic.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Innes Centre<\/a>, Norwich), and <a title=\"Simon Foster\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shef.ac.uk\/mbb\/staff\/foster\" target=\"_blank\">Simon Foster<\/a> (<a title=\"DMBB\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shef.ac.uk\/mbb\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology<\/a>, Sheffield).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3075\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/07\/CBCBsympPicture2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3075\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3075\" alt=\"Prof Simon Foster explains how the superbug Staphylococcus aureus grows and divides.\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2014\/07\/CBCBsympPicture2-300x223.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3075\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prof Simon Foster explains how the superbug Staphylococcus aureus grows and divides.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Professor L\u00f6we discussed his work using a range of biochemical and structural approaches to analyse the bacterial cell division and morphogenesis machinery. Professor Bibb explained how his lab utilises a combination of next generation DNA sequencing and bioinformatics with classical genetic analysis to discover novel antibiotics.
