{"id":4014,"date":"2017-02-02T11:17:38","date_gmt":"2017-02-02T11:17:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/?p=4014"},"modified":"2017-02-02T11:44:29","modified_gmt":"2017-02-02T11:44:29","slug":"origins-of-life-in-newcastle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/origins-of-life-in-newcastle\/","title":{"rendered":"Origins of life in Newcastle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/camb\/\" target=\"_blank\">ICaMB&#8217;s<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/cbcb\/staff\/profile\/jeff.errington\" target=\"_blank\">Prof Jeff Errington<\/a> organised and hosted an impromptu <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/cbcb\/about\/events\/item\/origins-of-life-a-workshop\" target=\"_blank\">symposium on the origins of life<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/cbcb\/\" target=\"_blank\">Centre for Bacterial Cell Biology (CBCB)<\/a> on Wednesday 18<sup>th<\/sup> January 2017. About 80 people attended, hearing 11 talks from a mixture of Newcastle and international speakers, including a number of guests who had travelled over from Japan for the meeting. The program was arranged more or less in \u201cchronological\u201d order, starting with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Formation_and_evolution_of_the_Solar_System\" target=\"_blank\">origins of the solar system<\/a> 4-6 billion years ago, and ending (still almost 2 billion years in the past) with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eukaryote#Origin_of_eukaryotes\" target=\"_blank\">emergence of the eukaryotes<\/a>. The meeting sparked several very lively discussions, perhaps reflecting the difficulty of doing standard hypothetico-deductive experiments on the topic, in the absence of time travel technology! Nevertheless, the day was a great success and is likely to lead to new international collaborations and funding opportunities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>By Jeff Errington<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>My\u00a0emerging interest in the subject has two origins. First, through ageing and trying to find a reason for existence before existence disappears! L-forms are cell wall deficient bacteria, which turn out to replicate by a slightly bizarre, seemingly haphazard mechanism involving membrane blebbing and tubulation. The process provides a model for how primitive life may have proliferated billions of years ago, before the invention of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cell_wall\" target=\"_blank\">cell wall<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The latest findings have led to a number of fascinating new scientific contacts, and about a year ago, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elsi.jp\/en\/research\/member\/researcher\/professor\/shigenori-maruyama.html\" target=\"_blank\">Prof Shige Maruyama<\/a>, who heads a major Japanese research institute dedicated to origins of life work called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elsi.jp\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI)<\/a>, made contact, proposing discussion around possible collaborations. After a series of small meetings in Newcastle and my\u00a0visit to Tokyo, momentum began to emerge, culminating with the proposal for a major workshop in Newcastle, with half a dozen or so ELSI members planning to attend.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4019\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2017\/02\/Origins3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4019\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4019\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2017\/02\/Origins3.jpg\" alt=\"Prof Shige Maruyama, ELSI, Tokyo, Japan\" width=\"260\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4019\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prof Shige Maruyama, ELSI, Tokyo, Japan<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As discussions developed, I identified various experts in Newcastle with complementary expertise and interests in the general area, and the idea for a full blown <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/cbcb\/about\/events\/item\/origins-of-life-a-workshop\" target=\"_blank\">symposium took shape<\/a>. There was even time to identify a top class international \u201cguest\u201d speaker, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.molevol.hhu.de\/prof-dr-w-f-martin.html\" target=\"_blank\">Prof Bill Martin<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uni-duesseldorf.de\/home\/startseite.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dusseldorf<\/a>, who came over at short notice to give the concluding talk.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the place to go through each talk in detail. However, from my perspective, what I hope people took away from the meeting would have included the following general points.<\/p>\n<p>First, the problem is amazingly multidisciplinary, with important contributions from astrophysicists, geochemists, organic chemists, microbiologists (structure\/function, metabolism and physiology) and evolutionary bioinformaticians. Second, we still have a very hazy understanding of many of the early events in the earth\u2019s planetary history, e.g. when did the water arrive and how much? Third, it is clear that microbes were responsible for huge changes in planetary chemistry, particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Oxygenation_Event\" target=\"_blank\">oxygenation<\/a> but also that planetary composition must have reciprocally influenced microbial evolution.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4021\" style=\"width: 180px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2017\/02\/Origins2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4021\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4021\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2017\/02\/Origins2.jpg\" alt=\"Prof Bill Martin, Dusseldorf, Germany\" width=\"170\" height=\"229\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prof Bill Martin, Dusseldorf, Germany<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The day concluded with a very nice dinner at the <a href=\"http:\/\/jesmonddenehouse.co.uk\/the-restaurant-at-jesmond-dene-house\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jesmond Dene House Hotel<\/a>, supported by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Newcastle University<\/a> and hosted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/eee\/staff\/profile\/nickwright.html\" target=\"_blank\">Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Nick Wright<\/a>. I\u2019m sure that the original owner of the house, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Armstrong,_1st_Baron_Armstrong\" target=\"_blank\">Lord Armstrong<\/a>, would have approved of the day (for example, I gather that his company won the contract to build ships for the Japanese Navy 120 or so years ago). I\u2019m also sure that as a <a href=\"https:\/\/royalsociety.org\/fellows\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fellow of the Royal Society<\/a> (elected in 1843) he would have been acquainted with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Darwin\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Darwin<\/a> and perhaps they too had interesting conversations about the origins of life in their own time frame.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ICaMB&#8217;s Prof Jeff Errington organised and hosted an impromptu symposium on the origins of life at the Centre for Bacterial Cell Biology (CBCB) on Wednesday 18th January 2017.
