{"id":724,"date":"2013-03-15T12:01:32","date_gmt":"2013-03-15T12:01:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/?p=724"},"modified":"2013-03-17T14:41:46","modified_gmt":"2013-03-17T14:41:46","slug":"jeff-errington-wins-novartis-medal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/jeff-errington-wins-novartis-medal\/","title":{"rendered":"Jeff Errington Wins Novartis Medal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/camb\/\" target=\"_blank\">ICaMB<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/camb\/staff\/profile\/jeff.errington\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Jeff Errington<\/a>, who has just been awarded the prestigious <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biochemistry.org\/Home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Biochemical Society<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"www.biochemistry.org\/Awards\/TheNovartisMedalandPrize.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Novartis Medal and Prize<\/a>\u00a0for 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The Novartis Medal and Prize is an annual award that recognises contributions to the development of any branch of biochemistry. Work leading up to the award must be carried out in the UK but is open to all nationalities. A list of previous winners can be seen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biochemistry.org\/Awards\/TheNovartisMedalandPrize\/PastrecipientsofTheNovartisMedalandPrize.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. A full list of the 2014 prize winners is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biochemistry.org\/Awards\/2014Winners.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/jeff-errington-wins-novartis-medal\/portrait-jeff-errington\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-729\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-729\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/files\/2013\/03\/Portrait-Jeff-Errington.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a>Jeff moved to Newcastle in 2005 where he became Director of ICaMB before standing down in 2012. \u00a0He founded the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/cbcb\/\" target=\"_blank\">Centre for Bacterial Cell Biology<\/a> (CBCB) in 2007, which has since become a world leading centre for microbial research with a strong interest in aiding the discovery of the next generation of antibiotics. \u00a0Jeff&#8217;s lab is best known for its ground breaking work\u00a0on the bacterial cell cycle and cell morphogenesis. \u00a0On the<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/\" target=\"_blank\"> ICaMB blog<\/a> we recently highlighted his Cell paper on <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/icamblog\/bulging-bacteria-and-life-origins\/\" target=\"_blank\">L-form bacteria and insights into primordial cell division.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is the video where Jeff describes the work in this paper<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bulging bacteria and the origins of life\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DBeOEbkggZM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Early work from the Errington lab led to the formation in 1998 of \u00a0Prolysis, an antibacterial drug discovery company, which was recently acquired by an international anti-infectives company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biotapharma.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Biota Pharmaceuticals Inc.<\/a> \u00a0More recently, a Newcastle University spin out company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.demuris.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Demuris Ltd<\/a>\u00a0has been established to exploit drug screening opportunities emerging from the Errington lab.<\/p>\n<p>In ICaMB, we are all delighted that Jeff&#8217;s work has received this recognition. \u00a0Above all it proves that you can achieve success in science while still being a a great guy who loves his beer and football.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations to ICaMB&#8216;s Professor Jeff Errington, who has just been awarded the prestigious Biochemical Society\u00a0Novartis Medal and Prize\u00a0for 2014.
