Some students will be able to spend time in a different university or research facility either within the UK or abroad. We encourage students to take this opportunity, but would like to point out a couple of things you should take into account beforehand.
The term “outside study” applies to all work/study related to your research degree which you’ll be performing away from Newcastle University campus for a period of more than four weeks. Before you leave, you have to complete some documents so we have all the information in case anything should happen. These are the outside study form and the risk assessment (for insurance purposes).
Basically what we need to know, is the following:
- Where: where will you be going? You will be asked to provide full address details.
- When: start and end date
- Why: the reason you’re away – learning a new technique, attend a course, …
- What: facilities, resources, appropriate research training
- Who: any supervision you will receive where you are
International students on a Tier 4 visa will be allowed outside study for up to 12 months without risking their visa being curtailed. The university will register a temporary “change of study location” for these students for the duration of their time away from university.
All students on outside study will still be expected to have regular contact with their academic supervisor (once per month), as well as formal contact with the entire supervisory team at least once per term.
Full details can be found on the University website and if you still have questions after reading all the info, then contact us on icm.pgstudentenquiries@ncl.ac.uk.
