If you’re currently in the process of applying for a postgraduate research project or if you’re getting registered for a PhD, MD or MPhil, then the following items could be of interest to you.
The ICM offers three types of degree; an MPhil, an MD, and a PhD. The MD is open to medically qualified students, whereas the MPhil and PhD are open to any postgraduate student with the right qualifications. You can read about the types of degree and timelines.
Sadly, all postgraduate programmes have to be paid for. The fees will depend on the type of degree, on whether you are a member of staff, home or international student, and on the laboratory costs of your research. Many students obtain a scholarship to pay for their studies but equally, you can fund your own programme.
The application process can appear complex. Please remember that the admissions team deal with applications for all degrees and for all subjects. Our best advice is to contact us when you are ready to apply, and to make sure that your application is clearly marked with your preferred institute – the ICM in our case – and preferred project area or supervisor.
International students may need to meet additional requirements to study in Newcastle. These may include a visa, and an IELTS or other equivalent language qualification.

When you join us in Newcastle, you will receive an invitation to register and attend an induction. The University’s postgraduate induction programme covers all of postgraduate life over a period of around 2 weeks, and on one of those days we will invite you to lunch with the ICM postgraduate team.
