{"id":263,"date":"2012-04-19T14:19:02","date_gmt":"2012-04-19T14:19:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/isg\/?p=263"},"modified":"2012-04-19T14:21:42","modified_gmt":"2012-04-19T14:21:42","slug":"263","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/isg\/?p=263","title":{"rendered":"Accessing UNIX files from Windows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Those who use our UNIX services (for example, web publishing or the <em>aldred <\/em>time-sharing server) often need an easy way to access their UNIX files from a Windows (or Mac) computer. \u00a0This is where the ISS Samba service steps in by allowing SMB\/CIFS access to your UNIX files.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re using a Windows common desktop computer on campus, you&#8217;ve already been authenticated and can access your files immediately. In Windows, go to\u00a0<strong>Start<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Run<\/strong>\u00a0(or\u00a0<strong>Start<\/strong>,<strong>Search Box<\/strong>\u00a0in Vista\/Windows 7) and enter:<\/p>\n<p>\\\\isssmb1\\<em>username<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Replacing\u00a0<em>username<\/em>\u00a0with your user ID.)<\/p>\n<p>After a couple of moments your UNIX home directory will appear in a new window.<\/p>\n<p>You can make the connection permanent and assign it to a drive letter so that your UNIX home directory will be available every time you log in. To do so, click\u00a0<strong>Start<\/strong>, right click on\u00a0<strong>My Computer\u00a0<\/strong>and choose\u00a0<strong>Map Network Drive<\/strong>.
