{"id":626,"date":"2022-03-29T03:23:54","date_gmt":"2022-03-29T02:23:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/islesummerschool2022\/?page_id=626"},"modified":"2022-08-18T22:50:19","modified_gmt":"2022-08-18T21:50:19","slug":"programme","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/islesummerschool2022\/programme\/","title":{"rendered":"Programme"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The International Society for the Linguistics of English (ISLE) Summer School lasts for one week from&nbsp;<strong>Monday 4<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;July to Friday 8<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;July 2022<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is the <strong>final <\/strong>programme for the Summer School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/teamup.com\/ksybjj3wk94xhjfs77?view=md&amp;showLogo=0&amp;showSearch=0&amp;showProfileAndInfo=0&amp;showSidepanel=1&amp;showTitle=0&amp;showViewSelector=0&amp;showMenu=0&amp;showAgendaHeader=1&amp;showAgendaDetails=0&amp;showYearViewHeader=1\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Summer School is designed to encourage participants to rethink global Englishes from decolonising and raciolinguistic perspectives. This will entail drawing important distinctions between Settler Englishes of the type found in New Zealand and other dialects which have instead evolved in colonial contexts. In the postcolonial Englishes of newly independent nations such as India, it is the indigenous languages which are regularly not given the credit they deserve for playing a key role in differentiating these varieties from Settler Englishes both structurally and socially. The \u201cEmpire Speaks Back\u201d Summer School offers presentations, workshops and social activities that seriously engage with the colonial and settlement histories of diverse World Englishes with a view to questioning and reshaping how they can best be modelled by the next generation of researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will take place at Newcastle University, UK and is currently planned as a <strong>hybrid meeting <\/strong>(i.e. you can participate virtually or in-person). The in-person programme is subject to COVID-19 national and international travel, border and quarantine restrictions. Please be aware that, as a result of these (or other factors beyond our control), ISLE may change the format of the Summer School to wholly online at a later date, cancel the full programme, or cancel elements within it. In-person participants should therefore organise their own health, travel and personal insurances in advance. Every effort will be made to update participants as quickly as possible should a change occur. We will closely communicate with those affected and try to find a satisfactory solution for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Educational excursions and social activities for in-person participants will be confirmed in the programme at a later date because some of these may depend on numbers registering for in-person participation as well as on public health guidance. The complete programme will be available nearer the start of the Summer School but the following are currently envisaged:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Social\/Educational Activities for in-person participants include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Conference dinner in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackfriarsrestaurant.co.uk\/banquethall\">Medieval Banquet Hall of Blackfriars Restaurant<\/a><\/li><li>Excursion to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.english-heritage.org.uk\/visit\/places\/st-pauls-monastery-jarrow\/history\/\">St Paul\u2019s Monastery<\/a> \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/jarrowhall.com\/\">Jarrow Hall<\/a> \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.english-heritage.org.uk\/visit\/places\/lindisfarne-priory\/History\/\">Lindisfarne<\/a><\/li><li>Access to the \u2018Linguistic History and Archaeology of Jarrow and Lindisfarne\u2019 e-booklet<\/li><li>\u2018Place-Names of Newcastle\u2019 e-booklet and tour led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/elll\/people\/profile\/dianawhaley.html\">Emeritus Professor Diana Whaley<\/a> (currently President of the Society for Name Studies in Britain and Ireland and a Vice-President of the Viking Society for Northern Research)<\/li><li>Film-screening of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2pSGZt-mhSY\"><em>Black \u201847<\/em><\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tynesideirishcentre.com\/\">Tyneside Irish Centre<\/a> with Q&amp;A led by <a href=\"https:\/\/ahc.leeds.ac.uk\/english\/staff\/690\/professor-tony-crowley\">Prof. Tony Crowley<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pure.qub.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/frances-kane\">Dr Frances Kane<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>From July 4<sup>th<\/sup>-7<sup>th<\/sup>, all participants will be actively involved in three kinds of learning opportunity \u2013 <strong>Presentations<\/strong>, <strong>Workshops<\/strong> and <strong>Pop-Up Mentoring<\/strong> <strong>slots<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Presentations<\/strong>&nbsp;will be delivered by leading scholars in postcolonial Englishes around the world. They also have expertise in novel approaches to our understanding of these varieties as products of colonialism, empire and racism.&nbsp;<strong>Workshops<\/strong>&nbsp;will provide opportunities to acquire practical skills and expertise for coding, transcribing, visualizing and statistically analysing linguistic data. There will also be hands-on sessions exploring manuscript materials relevant to the history of English and postcolonialism. The importance of acquiring expertise in how to exploit your research to benefit wider publics will be demonstrated in our on-site&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2011\/dec\/04\/digital-language-kitchen-paul-seedhouse\" target=\"_blank\">Digital Kitchen<\/a>&nbsp;which has been used to teach languages using motion sensor technology. Furthermore, every early career researcher needs to understand how to navigate the job market.
