{"id":230,"date":"2022-12-20T17:15:40","date_gmt":"2022-12-20T17:15:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/kats\/?page_id=230"},"modified":"2024-07-24T08:19:51","modified_gmt":"2024-07-24T07:19:51","slug":"kats-efects","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/kats\/kats-uk\/kats-efects\/","title":{"rendered":"KATS: EFECTS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-black-color has-text-color has-huge-font-size\"><strong>Introducing EFECTS<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-white-color has-text-color has-background has-medium-font-size\" style=\"background-color:#16a4f6;line-height:2\"><strong>Empowering young people to take climate action, take steps to protect marine bio<strong>diversity and become underwater superheroes<\/strong><\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\" style=\"line-height:2\">Throughout October and November 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/kats\/about-kats\/sample-page\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2\">Elle<\/a> together with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/engineering\/staff\/profile\/maria-valasiapeppa.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/engineering\/staff\/profile\/maria-valasiapeppa.html\">Dr Maria-Valasia Peppa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/engineering\/staff\/profile\/nassertuqan.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/engineering\/staff\/profile\/nassertuqan.html\">Dr Nasser Tuqan<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.watersecurityhub.org\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.watersecurityhub.org\">Water Security Hub<\/a>, delivered the KATS: EFECTS (Empowering Future Environmental Changemakers through Science) project across three primary schools in Newcastle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\" style=\"line-height:2\"> The project focussed on exploring the Sustainable Development Goals &#8211; especially SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). We learnt about the SDGs and used virtual reality headsets to explore life below water. During this story, students participated in a fun scientific experiment, gradually adding materials representing pollutants caused by human activities to Freddy&#8217;s waterways. Young people got the chance to share their knowledge of marine biodiversity, their attitudes towards climate change and got the chance to ask each other questions about their home environments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/kats\/files\/2022\/12\/qkaViSwA-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-247\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Photo: Flooded Cellar Productions<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-large-font-size\"><strong>Applying Climate Change Knowledge<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\" style=\"line-height:2\">We then went on a visit to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/\">Seven Stories<\/a> and participated in climate change debates (good guys vs bad guys) and became activists by creating their own climate change story banner! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\" style=\"line-height:2\">On December 9th, we wrapped up the KATS: EFECTS project at the <a href=\"https:\/\/greatnorthmuseum.org.uk\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/greatnorthmuseum.org.uk\/\">Great North Museum: Hancock,<\/a> where all the students from the three schools joined together for a day full of fun activities around marine biodiversity and climate change! After a re-cap of the project, the students got the chance to meet real life underwater superheroes &#8211; like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/engineering\/staff\/profile\/richarddawson.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/engineering\/staff\/profile\/richarddawson.html\">Professor Richard Dawson<\/a> from the Water Hub, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/engineering\/staff\/profile\/simonbenson.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/engineering\/staff\/profile\/simonbenson.html\">Dr. Simon Benson<\/a> who worked on the fantastic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theflipflopi.com\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.theflipflopi.com\/\">FlipFlopi <\/a>project. There were four categories &#8211; Best Climate Story Banner, Top Climate Debater, Chief News Reporter, and Marine Biodiversity Expert &#8211; with awards handed out to 16 students by our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.watersecurityhub.org\/\">Water Security Hub<\/a> colleagues!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-normal-font-size\" style=\"line-height:2\">The EFECTS project has been an important step to connecting young people around the world and create a global network of climate change superheroes. In 2023, the KATS team will be expanding the project even further internationally, continuing our work with the Water Security Hub by delivering KATS in India, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/kats\/kats-barbados-sids\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"74\">Barbados (2.0!)<\/a> and other Small Island Developing States (SIDS) countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-default has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;I learnt that I&#8217;m good at something.
