For the last three weeks children from Felton C of E Primary, West Jesmond Primary and St Cuthbert\u2019s RC Primary became citizen scientists adding their voices and data to research that looks at how climate change affects biodiversity with a focus on Puffins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Newcastle University KATS project (Puffins)\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0zn_AG1Dfis?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-large-font-size\"><strong>Exploring Local Biodiversities<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\" style=\"line-height:2\">Over two weeks the children became citizen scientists or \u201cPuffineers\u201d, to investigate biodiversity with a focus on the North East coastline and islands. Initially the children experienced biodiversity through virtual reality headsets, learned about the diets and habitats of Puffins, and focused on three SDGs \u2013 Climate Action (SDG13), Life Below Sea (SDG14) and Life on Land (SDG15). The children learned about the impact of air pollution on biodiversity, collecting air quality data themselves using pollution sensors and GPS technology on mobile phones. The children were able to apply what they had learnt about biodiversity during their school sessions on the trip. The University Puffin expert,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/nes\/people\/profile\/richardbevan.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/nes\/people\/profile\/richardbevan.html\"> Dr Richard Bevan<\/a> provided his expertise to the day presenting his research and answering questions.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/ecls\/people\/profile\/juliemorris.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/ecls\/people\/profile\/juliemorris.html\"> Dr Julie Morris <\/a>presented the children with prizes for best Puffarazzi photo, best audio captures and Puffin News report. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/executive\/profile\/daychris.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/executive\/profile\/daychris.html\">Professor Chris Day<\/a> called in and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@FloodedCellar\" data-type=\"URL\"
