This is a fully-funded project that sits at the exciting intersection of biology, engineering, and real-world patient impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Skin cancer is one of the UK&#8217;s most common cancers. We&#8217;re tackling this by pioneering a gentle, minimally invasive technique that collects molecular information from beneath the skin&#8217;s surface. This &#8216;microsampling&#8217; approach could one day make community screening for skin cancer a simple and accessible reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will be at the heart of this innovation, working to optimise the technique, discover key biomarkers, and test its use in a clinical setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project is a close collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findaphd.com\/common\/clickCount.aspx?theid=189501&amp;type=184&amp;DID=3415&amp;url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.ncl.ac.uk%2fmedical-sciences%2fpeople%2fprofile%2fmarkbirch-machin.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.findaphd.com\/common\/clickCount.aspx?theid=189501&amp;type=184&amp;DID=3415&amp;url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.ncl.ac.uk%2fmedical-sciences%2fpeople%2fprofile%2fmarkbirch-machin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Professor Mark Birch-Machin<\/a> (Professor of Molecular Dermatology), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findaphd.com\/common\/clickCount.aspx?theid=189501&amp;type=184&amp;DID=3415&amp;url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.ncl.ac.uk%2fnuppa%2fstaff%2fprofile%2fandrewporter.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.findaphd.com\/common\/clickCount.aspx?theid=189501&amp;type=184&amp;DID=3415&amp;url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.ncl.ac.uk%2fnuppa%2fstaff%2fprofile%2fandrewporter.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Andrew Porter<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/nuppa\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/nuppa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Newcastle University Protein and Proteome Analysis (NUPPA)<\/a> facility, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findaphd.com\/common\/clickCount.aspx?theid=189501&amp;type=184&amp;DID=3415&amp;url=https%3a%2f%2flynton.co.uk%2ftrainer%2fdr-samantha-hills%2f\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.findaphd.com\/common\/clickCount.aspx?theid=189501&amp;type=184&amp;DID=3415&amp;url=https%3a%2f%2flynton.co.uk%2ftrainer%2fdr-samantha-hills%2f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Samantha Hills<\/a> (Clinical Director at <a href=\"https:.\/\/lynton.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lynton<\/a>, the UK&#8217;s largest manufacturer of aesthetic, surgical and conservation lasers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Unique PhD Experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn&#8217;t a standard lab-based PhD. It&#8217;s a prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dimen.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MRC DiMeN iCASE studentship<\/a>, which means you&#8217;ll be co-developing this technology with our industrial partner, <a href=\"https:.\/\/lynton.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lynton<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your experience will include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A dedicated 3-month placement at <a href=\"https:\/\/lynton.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lynton<\/a>, gaining hands-on insight into how medical devices are really made, tested and used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mentorship from a full supervisory team of academic and industry experts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Training as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dimen.org.uk\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.dimen.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DiMeN<\/a> cohort, joining a network of over 140 PhD students across 5 leading universities the North of England.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is This for You?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re looking for a curious and motivated student with a background in life sciences or biomedical engineering.
