Our projects aim to achieve this goal via 2-3 visits to the research laboratory of the partnered academic, spanning the school day.<\/p>\n<p>We know from\u00a0experience\u00a0that a given amount of time during the first\u00a0visit is spent training the participants how to use some of the tools we take for granted. This is not a bad thing as it provides\u00a0everyone\u00a0the chance to take a step back and focus on the bigger picture of the difference in what a research lab looks like compared to the science classroom.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/leadingedge\/files\/2013\/05\/Skills_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-451\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/leadingedge\/files\/2013\/05\/Skills_1-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/leadingedge\/files\/2013\/05\/Skills_1-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/leadingedge\/files\/2013\/05\/Skills_1-1024x774.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/leadingedge\/files\/2013\/05\/Skills_1-396x300.jpg 396w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/leadingedge\/files\/2013\/05\/Skills_1.jpg 1298w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nHowever, not every project utilises the same tools and even the same scientific skills sets. To provide everyone with an insight into some of the skills we exploit in our labs we decided for our first 2013 workshop to focus on\u00a0practical\u00a0skills.<\/p>\n<p>We hosted the workshop in one of the three teaching laboratories housed in the\u00a0Faculty of Medical Sciences. Lab coats were provided, participants were mixed up to promote inter-school communication, and the fun began.\u00a0We devised a work plan through 4 tasks plus a tour of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/bioimaging\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bioimaging facilities<\/a> housed in the Faculty of Medical Sciences. \u00a0The tasks included:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1)<\/strong> Health and Safety Risk Assessment<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/leadingedge\/files\/2013\/05\/Skills_4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-448\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/leadingedge\/files\/2013\/05\/Skills_4-300x261.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/leadingedge\/files\/2013\/05\/Skills_4-300x261.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/leadingedge\/files\/2013\/05\/Skills_4-344x300.jpg 344w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/leadingedge\/files\/2013\/05\/Skills_4.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2)<\/strong> Know your pipette<\/p>\n<p><strong>3)<\/strong> Getting to know a microscope<\/p>\n<p><strong>4)<\/strong> Calculating the volume of &#8220;Gung&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It was a very active 2 hour session. Everyone enjoyed themselves. Mixing up the pupils worked well but also caused confusion amongst Teachers and Academics.
