Weeding Library Collections – Problem or Solution?.

This is a half day event organised by the University, College and Research Group (UCRG) Northern Section of CILIP.

Date and venue: Thursday 4th December 2008, 1.30-4.30pm at the Robinson Library, Newcastle University.

Is your library suffering from overcrowded shelves? How do you balance meeting the needs of your users whilst still having to weed your collections?
Is the UKRR (UK Research Reserve) project of interest to you?

This event will study the options currently available to libraries for weeding material and may interest libraries wanting to initiate a disposal policy. Jean Crawford (Project Manager of Phase 1 UKRR Project) will discuss the UKRR Project (http://www.cocoman.ac.uk/AltProjectdetails.aspx?id=28) as a future collaborative option for deselected journal material. Sally Curry from the Research Information Network will give the research library perspective whilst Hannah Smith from Better World Books will demonstrate how they can provide a greener option to libraries disposing of withdrawn monograph material. Time will also be allocated for dicussion of the topics raised.

Introduction to Quantitative Methods

1 December 2008, Newcastle University

Improve your understanding and use of data and statistics in your everyday work – this one day training course will consist of an equal balance of theory, examples and practical application. Content will include:

– The interpretation of commonly used statistical measures.

– Drawing conclusions from data to aid decision making.

– The use of data for target setting and monitoring.

– Collecting and describing data

– Data types and descriptive statistics

– Sampling strategies (includes practical)

– Drawing conclusions from data, target setting and monitoring

– Confidence intervals

– Presentation of data

– Index numbers and percentages

This course is targeted at those in the public sector who regularly use statistics in their work but who do not have a background in statistical analysis, as well as those who have such a background but would like to refresh their skills. The aim is to build confidence in using data in everyday work. The course will be at an introductory level. The purpose of this course is to provide participants with a background to mentoring, a basic framework for conducting mentoring both long and short term. The focus of the event is to enable participants to develop effectively as mentors in the context of the CILIP professional development scheme.

Mentor Training is a requisite for becoming a CILIP Mentor and this course is suitable for all CILIP members who have recently registered as CILIP mentors or are thinking of registering. Do come along and find out more about the mentoring scheme.

By the end of the day participants will:
Understand the function of mentoring in the CILIP CPD process
Have had the opportunity to explore and experience mentoring
Be able to make an assessment of their facility as mentors and identify their development needs in this area

Members who have previously attended a course on mentoring skills may attend the afternoon only (14.00-16.30) to join in the elements relating to the CILIP scheme.
