Just about everyone who uses the Internet starts (and ends) with Google.
\nBut what’s not so well known is the ‘Deep Web’: the parts of the Web that even Google cannot reach.<\/p>\n
The majority of the course is hands-on, with time to play and discover the very tip of the ‘Deep Web’\/Web 2.0 iceberg.<\/p>\n
The course will briefly investigate just what is meant by:
\nWeb 2.0
\nWikis, Blogs and RSS: interactive information management
\nFrom Friends Reunited to Facebook: social networking sites
\nYour virtual desktop: social bookmarks and file sharing; online calendars (delicious esnips)
\nTime to play: links to blogging software, RSS feeds, Wikis
\nThe Deep Web – What is it? When did it start?
\nDeep web sites: interacting with the information
\nTimetables, entertainment listings and dynamic information
\nBibliographic databases and library catalogues
\nShopping sites – ebay, amazon and froogle
\nMultimedia (and the importance of metadata)<\/p>\n
Paula Younger is a chartered librarian and qualified foreign languages teacher (though she managed to escape from schools) and now works for the NHS in Exeter. She has also worked for the Ministry of Defence and a small private publishing company.<\/p>\n
