{"id":2477,"date":"2016-07-15T10:48:50","date_gmt":"2016-07-15T09:48:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/?p=2477"},"modified":"2016-07-15T10:50:45","modified_gmt":"2016-07-15T09:50:45","slug":"vice-chancellors-award-winners-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/2016\/07\/15\/vice-chancellors-award-winners-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"Vice-Chancellor&#8217;s Award &#8211; Winners Announced!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are pleased to announce that this year\u2019s Vice Chancellor\u2019s Distinguished Teachers Award winners are Jean-Christophe Penet (SML) and Clare Guilding (SME).<\/p>\n<p>Both Clare and JC will receive their awards in congregations taking place today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/ltds\/funding\/vc\/\">The awards<\/a> were launched in 2010 in order to celebrate and recognise outstanding teaching at Newcastle.<\/p>\n<p>Each year three types of award are made; two for academic staff &#8211; a general award and an award for staff working within the societal challenge theme; and one for professional support staff.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates for the awards are expected to demonstrate leadership in teaching and learning and to innovate across the areas of pastoral care, supervision and curriculum design.<\/p>\n<p>Clare\u2019s innovative teaching techniques have already been the subject of one of our <a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.ncl.ac.uk\/casestudies\/\">Case Studies<\/a>, which looked at her use of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/2016\/04\/15\/star-case-study-saving-sim-man\/\">Sim-Man to teaching students diagnostic techniques<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Clare said: \u2018I&#8217;m delighted to receive this award which shows Newcastle University&#8217;s continued commitment to supporting good teaching practice and teachers in the institution.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>She has also been nominated for numerous Newcastle University Student Union\u00a0Teaching Excellence Awards\u00a0for\u00a0Innovative Teaching Methods, Contribution to Pastoral Support and last year picked up the Overall Outstanding Teacher Award.<\/p>\n<p>She has also received the Association for the Study of Medical Education (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.asme.org.uk\/\">ASME<\/a>) EDG\u00a0Educator Innovator Award (January 2016) and British Pharmacological Society\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bps.ac.uk\/news-events\/news\/society-news\/articles\/pharmacology-2015-prize-winners\">Education Prize<\/a>\u00a0(December 2015).<\/p>\n<p>Jean-Christophe is a lecturer in French and Translation studies in the School of Modern Languages.<\/p>\n<p>A founding member of the peer-support network <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/2016\/02\/10\/edubites-supporting-reflective-practice-event\/\">EDUBITES<\/a>\u00a0and a committed advocate of peer support for teaching \u2013focused staff, he\u2019s the Employability Officer in his School and runs a range of initiatives with local businesses.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u2018I like especially that these awards are not based simply on module evaluations or peer review but on a more holistic approach to teaching and learning, taking in lots of elements of professional practice.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s so important to recognise the value of great teaching and to support and encourage that across the University.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately there were no nominations in the Professional Support Staff category this year \u2013 we hope that this will be rectified next year and would like to encourage staff to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/ltds\/funding\/vc\/\">nominate support staff<\/a> who have made an outstanding contribution to learning and teaching.<\/p>\n<p>You can read profiles of each of the VC Award winners and hear more about what they think makes for outstanding teaching on the LTDS blog next week!<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations Clare and JC!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are pleased to announce that this year\u2019s Vice Chancellor\u2019s Distinguished Teachers Award winners are Jean-Christophe Penet (SML) and Clare Guilding (SME).
