It is easy for us to add new people to the Trello Board as the project progresses irrespective of where they are.<\/p>\n<p>To put on a course we bring together a team &#8211; academic colleagues, digital media, LTDS. \u00a0We are in different locations, and our academic leads can often be off campus. \u00a0An online tool works really well for us.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/mooc-images.ncl.ac.uk\/shed2\/trellopic.jpg\" alt=\"Trello screenshot\" width=\"1536\" height=\"849\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Enterprise Shed 2 Trello Board<\/p>\n<h2>Mocking up courses<\/h2>\n<p>Trello comes into its own after we have done a good deal of planning (on <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/2015\/07\/02\/a-toast-to-post-it-notes-for-learning-design-2\/\">Post-it notes and paper<\/a>).\u00a0 We create a Trello List for each Week and give each step a Trello card.<\/p>\n<p>By mocking up the course in this way it makes it easy to check that we have variety of media\/approaches and it enables us to experiment with different routes through the learner activities.<\/p>\n<p>If we think the content could be ordered better, then Trello allows us to drag and drop elements.<\/p>\n<p>We also tend to add\u00a0extra Trello Lists to the board to share project documents and resources eg actions around Marketing. This gives us a a complete \u201cdashboard\u201d for the project.<\/p>\n<h2>Customising Trello \u2013 agreeing conventions<\/h2>\n<p>One of the best things about Trello is that it is so easy to customise \u00a0to meet your needs.\u00a0 If you can agree conventions with your team before you start you will reap the rewards later.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples of what we did:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To help us see the mix of content in each week we defined labels that related to the activity type for each step, and applied these labels to the steps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><sub>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/09\/trello_labels.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2611\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/09\/trello_labels.png\" alt=\"trello_labels\" width=\"287\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><\/sub><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We added Trello checklist to steps to record work to be done and progress.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/09\/trello_todo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2612 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/09\/trello_todo.png\" alt=\"trello_todo\" width=\"363\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/09\/trello_todo.png 363w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/09\/trello_todo-300x186.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We dragged cards which were finished to the \u201cdone\u201d list once work on the associated step was complete.<\/li>\n<li>Borrowing from agile practitioners, we indicated the amount of work left on a card by adding a number of asterisks to the end of each card\u2019s title. (*) trivial, through to (***) significant<\/li>\n<li>We put links on each card so that we could go straight to the step on the course. \u00a0That way if you spotted your name on a card, had time to give you could click through and edit the course content in a couple of clicks.<\/li>\n<li>We added comments to Trello cards to\u00a0remind ourselves of where we had got to, and\u00a0to\u00a0leave notes for other team members.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/09\/trellocomment.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2610 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/09\/trellocomment.png\" alt=\"trellocomment\" width=\"635\" height=\"153\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/09\/trellocomment.png 635w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/09\/trellocomment-300x72.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Other useful things<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is mobile friendly &#8211; Trello works really well on phones and tablets and has mobile apps available from the relevant\u00a0appstores.<\/li>\n<li>Trello has a good\u00a0search function \u2013 eg \u201c#video\u00a0 WEEK 2\u201d gives the status of steps in Week 2 that have been labelled as video.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/09\/trello_search.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2615 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/09\/trello_search.png\" alt=\"trello_search\" width=\"512\" height=\"149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/09\/trello_search.png 512w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/09\/trello_search-300x87.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Trello\u2019s API means we can import\/export to spreadsheets (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlebluemonkey.com\/blog\/online-scrum-tools-part-3-upload-existing-product-backlog-into-trello\">http:\/\/www.littlebluemonkey.com\/blog\/online-scrum-tools-part-3-upload-existing-product-backlog-into-trello<\/a> worked nicely!); We experimented with putting the activity feed to Slack but it was a bit overwhelming!<\/li>\n<li>Keyboard shortcuts are well worth learning \u2013 my favourite: you can add yourself to a card by pressing spacebar.<br \/>\nFor more see: <a href=\"https:\/\/trello.com\/shortcuts\">https:\/\/trello.com\/shortcuts<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See the <a href=\"https:\/\/trello.com\/\">Trello.com<\/a> for more details.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The LTDS Online Courses Team\u00a0have been experimenting with a number of online tools to support team-working and in the process have become great fans of Trello.
