{"id":3003,"date":"2016-11-29T15:28:40","date_gmt":"2016-11-29T15:28:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/nutela\/?p=313"},"modified":"2017-03-24T10:46:08","modified_gmt":"2017-03-24T10:46:08","slug":"video-transcripts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/2016\/11\/29\/video-transcripts\/","title":{"rendered":"Video Transcripts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As well as helping learners who are hard of hearing. \u00a0Captions and transcripts also help:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>non-native speakers<\/li>\n<li>people accessing resources on limited bandwidth<\/li>\n<li>those without soundcards or headphones<\/li>\n<li>people who prefer to read and annotate text<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this activity we\u2019d like to show you how to add subtitles to a video on YouTube.\u00a0 You\u2019ll need a video, a script and a google account.<\/p>\n<p>Feel free to use the following example files that we used in the Nutela session.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Video: <a href=\"http:\/\/stream.ncl.ac.uk\/flash\/nuala.davis\/nutela\/transcripts_subtitles.mp4\">transcripts and subtitles (<\/a>right click and select<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/videoscript.docx\">videoscript<\/a> save as)<\/li>\n<li>the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/videoscript.docx\">videoscript<\/a>\u00a0(right click and select save as)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sign into YouTube with your own google account<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Upload the video to YouTube (look for the upload button in the top right), and click Publish when it is done<\/li>\n<li>Click on the Video manager button<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/videomanager.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-319\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/videomanager.png\" alt=\"videomanager\" width=\"132\" height=\"45\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click the drop down next to the video and select \u201c<strong>Subtitles &amp; CC<\/strong>\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/subtitles.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-320\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/subtitles.png\" alt=\"subtitles\" width=\"383\" height=\"229\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Next click \u201cAdd new subtitles or CC\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/add-new.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-323\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/add-new.png\" alt=\"add-new\" width=\"380\" height=\"159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/add-new.png 380w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/add-new-300x126.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The method we will use here is \u201c<strong>Transcribe and auto-sync<\/strong>\u201d as this will automatically set the timings of the text:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/transcribe-and-autosync.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-325\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/transcribe-and-autosync.png\" alt=\"transcribe-and-autosync\" width=\"404\" height=\"253\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Paste your text into the text box and then click \u201c<strong>Set timings<\/strong>\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/settimings.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-327\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/settimings.png\" alt=\"settimings\" width=\"155\" height=\"51\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You will now see an option under \u201cMy Drafts\u201d.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wait 30 seconds or so and then click the refresh button:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/mydrafts.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-314\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/mydrafts.png\" alt=\"mydrafts\" width=\"390\" height=\"73\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now you can check that it has aligned it correctly by listening to the video and make any changes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To adjust the timings click on the phrase you wish to change and then drag the blue tabs:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/change-timings.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-316\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/change-timings.jpg\" alt=\"change-timings\" width=\"236\" height=\"171\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Once you are happy with the words, punctuation and timings click \u201c<strong>Publish edits<\/strong>\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/publishedits.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-317\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2016\/11\/publishedits.png\" alt=\"publishedits\" width=\"123\" height=\"56\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You should see the following video, click on the CC button to view the captions.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How we add subtitles\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oyNsUVT3fQs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>(Our demo video is about how we generate subtitles when we don&#8217;t have a script.)<\/p>\n<h2>YouTube also has a function which automatically generates subtitles<\/h2>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t have a script for your video you may be able to make use of the automatic subtitles which YouTube adds to all videos.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In Subtitles &amp;
