It&#8217;s UK law from May 2018&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2018\/02\/europe-2021308_1280.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3873\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2018\/02\/europe-2021308_1280-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2018\/02\/europe-2021308_1280-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2018\/02\/europe-2021308_1280-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2018\/02\/europe-2021308_1280-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2018\/02\/europe-2021308_1280.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) becomes law in the UK this May.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the vote to leave the European Union, the Government has confirmed that they will adopt the GDPR, which will therefore be law in the UK from 25 May 2018.<\/p>\n<h3>How does it affect learning and teaching?<\/h3>\n<p>Well, all members of University staff have certain responsibilities under our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/data.protection\/policy.htm\">Data Protection Policy<\/a> to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>be aware of the Data Protection Act (and therefore GDPR) and what it means to the University<\/li>\n<li>follow the policy and procedures for handling personal data<\/li>\n<li>consult with the Information Security Officer (Compliance) for advice and guidance when necessary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Wherever personal data is held about anyone, staff, students, visitors etc. there is a legal requirement to comply with the regulation.<\/p>\n<p>The University takes it&#8217;s responsibilities for GDPR seriously, and has a number of Information Security Officers who deal with compliance, but there are local requirements and schools and units should familiarise themselves with the changes.<\/p>\n<p>Newcastle University IT service (NUIT) has put together some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/data.protection\/staff\/GDPR\">brief guidance<\/a> on how the GDPR affects <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/data.protection\/staff\/schoolchecklist.htm\">schools<\/a>, some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/data.protection\/staff\/doanddont.htm\">Dos and Don&#8217;ts<\/a> and some useful links to further guidance from the Information Commissioner&#8217;s Office (<a href=\"https:\/\/ico.org.uk\/for-organisations\/guide-to-the-general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr\">ICO<\/a>) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=uriserv:OJ.L_.2016.119.01.0001.01.ENG&amp;toc=OJ:L:2016:119:TOC\">regulation itself<\/a> on the EU website.<\/p>\n<p>There is a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/ltdev\/files\/2018\/02\/20180202-JNB-GDPR-Update-for-HoU.pdf\">Brief Update and Guidance<\/a> (PDF) from the Registrar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>How can I find out more?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The University of Groningen has produced a free online course on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futurelearn.com\/courses\/general-data-protection-regulation\">Understanding the General Data Protection Regulation<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Jisc has a free online webinar on 16 March 2018: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/training\/gdpr-into-practice\">GDPR: into practice &#8211; online briefing.
